According to the Mercedes they pass there sell by date at this point I thought it was 10years but yours is obviously different for some reason I may be wrong!
its up to you if you wana replace mate its your safety the thing is it might still work fine but there will be no garuantee after that date??

The other option is to change the steering wheel to a non airbag the only reason I say this is because if its out of date then you never know if one day it may deploy itself unexpectedly who know

BTW I am no airbag expert just my opinion :P

Yeah they go all mouldy gross.gif and you could end up with a face full of mould gross.gif

Sorry couldnt resist.

Well first things first is to ring Mercedes and find out exactly how much a replacement airbag unit is. ;) Its only the center part not the complete steering wheel.

Probably cost in the region of £300-£400

An airbag was £1,347 in 1990 so I think it's gonna be more than you think!

That's for the whole system to be fitted to the car, sensors, control units, etc etc. Like Matt says, the only part that needs replacing is the bag itself so wont be anywhere near as much as that.

Exactly, thats why I suggested to ring them first and see how much the part is :)

There are no checks at all on airbags as part of the MOT Test. MOTT.

If my car came with an AirBag as standard (which goes out of date in 2008)
can i replace the steering wheel with a non-AirBag wheel?
If so, is there some sort of electrical trick to prevent the SRS light being on permanently?

Take the bulb out of the dash ;)
On a serious note you will lose all the srs including the belt pullers.
Dont do it mate.
The bag will be fine for a few years yet.
It will not explode on you,it just means it is not guaranteed to deploy in an accident.
But saying that it probably will.

How about the other way round? I have a steering wheel with airbag but dont have the system in the car. I quite fancy having the bag removed from the wheel to be honest before I put it on. Any idea how I can do this?

I measured the circuit for the airbag and it seems that if one were to place a 3 ohm resistor in the circuit that this would maintain all the functionality of the SRS. I just bought an OMP wheel and I plan on doing this. How does one get an airbag wheel off and replace it with a momo hub?
Thanks

johnalpi, on my 1993 car there is a black SRS label on the driver's side front door-shut.
Mine expires in 2008 :P

Didn't one of the motoring programes do a feature on airbags, where they tested some of the very first ones installed (25 years old rings a bell) and they worked perfectly?

another thing that can be done is to swap the airbag with a post 91 airbag and wheel, and put the matching (non-expiring srs crash sensor) in place. get a sportline steering wheel after 91, for example.

You need to disconnect is under the passenger footwell then remove the wheel, two torx screws to remove the air bag section then one large bolt to remove the wheel, what were you thinking of changing it to? a full aftermarket kit i.e steering wheel and boss kit.

If so there are many wheels and boss kits to go for, please use the search to see all the different wheels people have fitted, not going into that as there are enough threads on the different types of wheels, 350mm and the correct boss kit and your good to go.

Up to you, Smiffy is selling a boss kit and there are ones on ebay at £14.99 that fit most wheels i.e momo, sparco etc but wont fit Nardi and Personal wheels as there are complete different fitments, but seeing as you have a momo wheel all you need is this

Ill go over it again on how to remove the air bag wheel:

-In tha passenger footwall remove the carpet and unplug the srs plug
-Then the battery
-There are two holes behind the wheel
-There torx screws here undo these
-Then once done the airbag section will remove
-Then undo the centre bolt
10mm ^^^

Ok thanks for the info will follow the instructions and replace the wheel..with the srs system not working will this not put the system into fault does it require it for mot ? and how easy is it to reconnect the system..i'll give it a go anyways. and post pics when done.. :D also found this which i guess is not the correct type...

Steering Wheel Adaptor Boss Kit
PART NUMBER 6008
Once your original steering wheel has being removed the airbag comes off with it.
The new Boss Kit fits back onto your car allowing the new steering wheel to be fitted.
The difference of an airbag boss kit is that the airbag boss will allow the airbag light to turn off once fitted.

Will Fit The Following Cars.

MERCEDES

CHASSIS

W 168 CLASS A

W 163 CLASS M

W 220 CLASS S

W 210 CLASS E

W 202 CLASS C

638 CLASS V

To fit on all MOMO steering wheels, but only cars with airbags fitted

okidokie...

I searched all of the interior and electrical sections for the terms "airbag" and "srs", using both forum searches and manually ctrl+f'ing on every page... And I all I came up with was these two threads so I merged them.

My latest acquisition has the SRS light on, so I want to reset it or fix the fault.
My own 190 and the one before it didnt have airbags so this system is new to me.

Hopefully we have some more info now since this topic was last touched in 2007! (edit, found more threads in 2008 - merged in here now)

With the SRS light on, does that mean the whole system is deactivated? Seatbelt tensioners included?

I will price a new airbag but it would be nice to find a simpler solution first..

Thoughts please :)

More info found in another thread:

the airbag system:

and to remove it:

do not just pull the airbag towards you!!
Go to the passenger footwell, remove the carpet section, remove the steel panel under the carpet.
Under this panel there is a red plug marked SRS,disconnect this plug with the battery disconnected.
Feel behind the wheel boss for two recessed holes(3 and nine o'clock)
Inside these holes is a securing screw(30 torx from memory)
You will need a long torx bit, undo these screws and then the bag will come forward.
Pull the red connector in the centre of the airbag and fully remove the bag(store it face up well out of the way) then remove the steering wheel centre lock bolt(10mm allen key)the wheel will then come off.
The bolts are marked number 20/70 in the picture of the steering wheel.
Have fun and be safe

Still want to reset the light though. Presuming that the airbag going out of date is the "fault", how does the system know what is a new airbag?? I'll disconnect that plug and reconnect it to see if it does anything, but I know somebody out there knows something..
