Hi everyone,
Im after some help with the above;

I have a 2.6 Manual 190.

The power steering stopped working last year and the car has sat since - on my quest to get it back on the road this is the last thing left!

The leak is from the box area by the exhaust manifold. As quick as you put fluid in, it excapes. I really should have got under and had a good look but i couldnt last time. It does seem to be coming from the rear of the box and i dont think its a pipe.

Ive ordered a replacement box but i wanted to know if anyone could offer a guide or step by step of how to replace it. Any pictures of whats under there and where the pipes go would be superb. even a diagram if anyone has one.

Any help appreciated.

also; how much would you pay to have it changed?

Someone i know has offered to do it for £50 but isnt actually getting round to doing it and another garage want £80 excluding the part.

I can tackle it myself im sure this was more for ease and time. If i can get a write up, i will get cracking myself i think!

replacing the steering box............................first off there are only 2 pipes and they are different fittings ,so can only go on one way ;)
secondly, you will need to remove the heat shield round the back of the steering box( one 8mm bolt behind the box, another 8mm bolt under the car when it meets another pieice of heat shielding)...............this is fiddly but can be done....................the allen bolt, for the clamp where the steering column is best got at from underneath ;) ............then seperate the big arm from the rest of the steering mechanism..............DONT remove the from the box...................as its awkward to get off and must be aligned to be refitted...................lastly there are 3 bolts keeping the box on the inner wing.....................these can be got at by removing the drivers side wheel ;) word or warning the box is heavier than you think,so be careful when lifting it out ;)

think that about covers it ;)

Legend :D

Am i right in thinking i can take mine off, put the used one on and refill the system without issue? Ie no set up/tricky alignment is needed?

I assumed keeping the wheels straight and steering wheel straight during the process would stop any issue.

Also - how do you seperate the big arm from rest of the steering mechanism?

am i right in thinking its

1. Remove heatshield
2. Remove clamp from under car
3. Pull big arm away from steering wheel side but leave this in the box (how long is the arm)
4. 3 bolts in inner wing.

do the same in reverse with new box and fill with ps fluid?

thanks again

no,there will be no issuses as long as you dont take the pitman arm off ;)

the steering mechanism consists of the box and several arms with a track rod like fitting on the ends......................the pitman arm( the one the goes on the box) is about 4-6 inches long..........and the next arm is fixed to it with a track rod end..................so to seperate them you need a balljoint/track rod splitter ;)

once you fitted the box...............fill the pump up.................with the engine off and take the steering from lock to lock slowly a few times to clear any air out, fill if neccessary, get a friend to start engine watch for level dropping and be prepared to fill quickly ,not letting the level drop below minimum mark, take from lock to lock again a few times slowly, but dont hold it at full lock for any length of time,as these are self bleeding systems :)

cheers fella. Your replies are very helpful indeed - perhaps a useful sticky for someone in my position in future.

One last question (i think :p) judging from your description i need a special tool perhaps, is this the case?

And this Pitman arm lol will the new box have one fitted?

I will try to take pics of the part and fitting if i do it and ill also put up the details of the company i used to get and the price which may help some other members :)

got the part now....seems more simple than i thought - a few more questions for anyone who can help;

1. does the downpipe or any part of the exhaust need to come off for access - its a 2.6
2. do i need a ball joint/track rod splitter tool?
3. how do you lift and fit the new one into place. my concern is that my car is already very very low and trying to lift the new box into place and bolt on whilst underneath the car seems ipossible

i dont have access to a lift at the moment and so im trying to conclude whether i can do this on jacks and stands or whether i need to get a garage to do it.

any help appreciated

1,dont know to be honest.................mine is a 2.0 diesel and i didnt have to remove the downpipe

2) yes

3) its bit of a 2 handed job..............so would be much easier if you had someone to help ( put bolts in while you hold it)....................and i did mine with one side of the car on a axle stand...................needed something to stand on though so i could reach over into the bonnet of the car
