Hi all,

I have a 190d 2.5 and i am afraid the release bearing has decided enough is enough.

2 questions, both related......

1, does anyone know where i can get a release bearing on its own as the clutch plate is ok??

2. if not can anyone suggest somewhere thats cheaper than ECP at £165?? GSF dont do one apparently :(

Cheers for all your help.

I love offset.

I got that from GSF too when trying to buy a 16v clutch, though I also suspected they were simply switching off their brains and did not want to help as soon as they heard I was doing a transplant/conversion etc.. They thought Id be coming back after ordering the wrong one..

Anyway, try your local motorfactor, Ive built up a decent relationship with mine through repeat business, even get a small discount now, and getting help is never a problem. Better service than the multibranch chain stores...

Good luck!

you might as well replce the whole clutch while you've got the gearbox off..................because if the thrust bearing has gone.....................the rest of the clutch probably wont be far behind ( a few months) then you'll have all that work to do again

I don't believe M-B necessarily do complete clutch kits (at least, that's what they told me) but it's such a Bu66er to do the release bearing on its own that I'd agree with Shrekky - then you're fine for a few hundred thousand miles. I'd use an OEM release bearing and a Sachs clutch...

^^+2 It makes sense to just replace the whole kit as you will have the box out anyway........ As for GSF they seem to be phasing out what parts they supply for 190's they could'nt give me a cost for the down pipe on the 2.6 the other day because they just do not list it. Shame really cause I have allways used GSF in the past for Merc parts

LuK Clutches seem popular, but I'm not sure if they're just 'performance'/upgrade products.
Worth a Google.

The best clutches I have used are O/E spec Sachs is what I used on the old valver and it felt like it was back to original once installed with very smooth sure footed operation this only applies if you are fitting to a standard engine not a tuner

i have found a release bearing for £28 so i will try that first. I appreciate all the comments about the box coming out twice but as i will be doing it, this is not an issue. Besides the clutch really really doesnt slip in the slightest. I would have more qualms about doing this on a customers car but as its mine i am totally happy to try the bearing first.

Cheers all

Hi all,

Well the clutch has let go, when i changed the release bearing one of the clutch springs was in the fingers of the pressure plate. I put it back together and drove it for a while until i could get the clutch kit sorted.

It came from GSF in the end and looks to be a quality LUK item.

Upon removal of the old clutch the centre springs had smashed their locating ring and this was a suprise to say the least as it is 4mm steel!!

Has anyone else seen this? its not like i drag race the car, slip the clutch or it has a surfeit of power :D

I've just purchased a Sachs clutch assy (previous was LUK) for €200 including vat, about £170 which I considered reasonable from a German car parts specialist similar to GSF. By the way I also purchased a clutch arm, the arm ball & spigot bearing from M-B at an extra cost of €77 (£65). As the gearbox is coming out I think it's worth replacing these items also as no doubt they are all original and may help to eliminate some noise from the trust bearing at idle but this I suspect is mainly due to slightly worn gearbox bearings.
