Have had my 1.8 almost 2 years now bought it with a whining diff but otherwise immaculate with full MB history 86,000 miles. About a year ago started making enquiries about curing the whine, one so called specialist in Sussex never even returned my calls, another nearer home in Lincs gave various excuses as to why he could not do it even though i had booked it in weeks in advance.About a month ago a new Merc independent advertised in our local rag i contacted him and he gave my car a thorugh health check for £30.00!!! He could not do the diff unless i had an exchange which was £1100.00 from stealership but he new a man who could fit everything to make my car silent again.Well today i got the Merc back from Euro car care uk ltd tel. 01733 894441 (Peterborough) it is completely cured, Ram the owner of Euro car would not late me take the car until he had personally driven me in it to make sure i was completely happy with the car he is a man in his mid fifties who lives and breathes Mercedes ,he has a vast knowledge of our model and told me that the main dealership in his youth always changed the diff oil in new 190e models after the first 500 miles and they never had any problems with any of the cars they sold, needless to say mine will be going back in a month or so for the oil change. The cost of the work? labour £220.50 diff bearing kit part no. 2013500449 £130.00 including vat total cost £403.00 ;)

This is important, I think every member should get this done at least every 2yrs as a lot tension is on the rear and the diff controlling
back end.
I had my cossie diff oil done by a specialist in Birmingham last year (WDM cars) perry barr Brum, type into google & no and details will come up, these guys also buy and sell mercs and have vast knowledge of all models... charged about £70 parts and labour.

Money well spent, car even feels much smoother and better to drive, all I have left is my gearbox oil to change but Im gona mission that myself pretty soon..

:driver: Just a quick update had a 140 mile trip out today have got to agree the car is now so smooth & quiet exactly how a Merc should be, we also have a Mazda 6 & a Subaru forester but only the 190 gives the "feelgood factor" best £400 .00 i have ever spent!!

hi, glad your diff is sorted as there seems to be a lot around with the same problem, what does the bearing kit consist of , is it the side output bearings or the front bearing or all three, i asked a question on here about the problem but no one has got back to me, need to get mine sorted as its annoying to say the least,

B) Hi, i suppose it could be done in one day but he asked me to leave it with him for 3 days due to the level of work he had in , give him a call see what you can work out is my advice.

Diff bearing kit ! interesting

did you ask for a repair kit or was just told to order new bearings or did the man order the parts himself

i only ask as i dont think any of us has serviced the diffs with any great results yet
but £130 and a few hours could be our answer

good to hear your happy with the results B)

This is the repair kit Steve,

http://www.mercedes-benz-parts.co.uk/index.php?option=com_virtuemart&sku=a2013500449&Search=Go&page=shop.product_details&flypage=shop.flypage&option=com_virtuemart

having had a look inside the diff I just bought and also looking on the russian site this is a job for the pros, I may well give this guy a ring, I wonder what the labour charges are for just the repair not including the removal.

Well done with the diff and am pleased you have brought this to the attention of this forum. I saw your letter in the June Gazette and wondered how much the repair had cost. My local indie, who is great and an ex-M-B main dealer mechanic, just shook his head when I asked if he would be prepared to strip down & rebuild my diff. Normally it's an exchange from the factory job, so a rebuild/repair is definitely a job for an expert - and you've found him! Great stuff :D

B) Yes without a doubt Ram certainly knows his stuff a visit to his garage is indeed an eye opener there were Mercs of all types & ages there, i am at the moment toying with the idea of a 1990 300 SL with 53,000 0n the clock & full history but every time i open the garage & see the 190 i have doubts!!
