Martrider - 2.5-16v I've had the Valver for maybe a little over a year now, can't even remember! Rolled, crunched, but running gear straight and a good engine. The original plan was to put all of the gubbins into my Red shell with R1 Bike carb conversion from Bogg Bros - now just going to be a straight swap for the time being. Well, i ordered it, got back in touch and they said they'd sold it. Recently been made redundant, so theroetically a lot of time to spend on it! But....The cars are in the Midlands, and i am in London full time now. But....A friend of mine wants to buy my Mini, so may do the work for me and take the Mini as payment (with a cherished reg on it too). So we'll see, but i may well invoke the power of the forum, and make up a working party weekend/BBQ/**insert swear word here**-up at mine at some stage this summer as i suggested last year. I really want my Merc back on the road. |

I'm getting a 190E / turbo ready for track work in Melbourne, Australia. I'll post some pics here later. I've previously built Mazda RX2 and RX4 as well as a 450SE for track work, now is time to do something which is actually fast and handles... A couple of questions: How do I know if I have a sportline 190E? My car has 5 speed manual, 2.0 8v engine, Garrett GT25 turbo with FMIC, and turbosmart BOV... Will 225/50-15" Yokohama A032R tyres fitted to 15x7 Lorinser wheels fit under the fenders without rubbing on anything? Its currently got 195/60-15 tyres but looks like bigger would also fit. I noticed its got solid front discs, whats needed to convert it to the vented discs from the 190E 2.3? I. |

Welcome ![]() You can directly bolt on the front calipers and discs from a 2.6. There are a good range of discs out there, vented and grooved/spotted though I would avoid drilled ones. A decent set of pads and some braided lines and you will have a mild upgrade with better feel and they wont fade as early. Another member here worked it out that the 2.6 brakes are not exerting any more braking effort, but it is worthwhile and cheap mod if you find your standard brakes overheat easily. You should start a new thread with some info and pics about your turbo 8v

Hi & welcome, Post piccies of your car, and tell us as much as you can about it. You can upgrade your brake discs to even bigger ones from a W124/202 but then you will need bigger wheels of course, I have a 2.6 and I found that using a trackday/fast road pad and dot 5 fluid, together with bleeding your brakes often, gives you much more stopping power , together with no fade, and no overheating. yes thats the one but don't hold it against me
While the 2.3-16v would seem to be the natural to turbocharge, for some reason the PO chose to turbo the plain 2.0 8v engine. It was explained to me "the engine was rebuilt for the turbo", and it certainly goes well, but I've got no supporting documentation to confirm that. A squiz inside the oil filler cap shows a squeaky-clean engine which does't look like its done many km at all. Oel pressure is better than my other MBs (a 450SE and a 6.9) never drops below 2 bar.
Thanks for that, I'll visit the breakers and see what they have on hand. By directly bolt on I hope you mean that I can simply remove my existing calipers and discs, mount new vented/grooved/drilled discs on the existing hubs, bolt up the 2.6 calipers, bleed and go? The sprint events we do in Australia are 12min/heat meaning at a place like Sandown or Philip Island we can cover 7-8 hot laps. My experience with cars with similar solid/solid disc setups to the early 190E is that it will pull up very well until the brakes overheat at around 5-6 laps (or less if its a 35-40 degree day), while vented discs extend that range allowing us to go hard for the whole time out there. By contrast the S-class 450SE we compete in has large vented discs up front and large solid discs out back and with competition pads easily holds up for the whole 12 min heat.
Thats good to know and I'll bear it in mind for the future. At the moment I have a large number of 15" R-spec Yokohama A032R semi-slick tyres to go through so the 15" wheels will remain for the time being.
I'll put some pics up over the weekend, its easier to provide info about it with the support of pictures. I do know that so far I can't see any obvious brand-name on the turbo kit other than Garrett M24 on the turbo... the other things I have noticed are that it has a BBS front bumper/spoiler, Lorinser wheels, the car has been lowered but no indication what method/brand springs have been used. Car has black leather interior, which is odd... I've never seen a 190 with leather, only cloth or MB Tex. First things for me to sort out are: replace steering wheel - it has an aftermarket 13" wheel and I prefer a 14" fix tacho - works sometime, but most of the time not install a boost gauge fix the exhaust system - it needs replacing locate a haynes manual or MB online W201 manual. (In the W116 world we use this web site for a full online service manual W116 service manual so it would be good to locate a similar W201 manual). I. |

EDIT: I was wrong on the oil pressure thing, it is bar. Read it in an MB engine manual. Sorry! And yes, thats the beauty of the 2.6 front brake swap, sounds perfect for your application. Id be interested to see how they last the full session with some good discs and pads. Good move on the 350mm (14") steering wheel too, try get one with a bit of dish too, it will let you stretch your legs a bit and improve the driving position. Are you still using normal interior for the track work? At the very least you will need a CG-Lock attachment for your seat belt.. Looking forward to the pics, the spec list makes for nice reading so far

It did actually, my plans have changed a little, getting hold of more and more parts which is good, Now, it going to be: A rebodied 2.5-16 into my Red Shell, 300-TE Calipers all round with vented discs, Koni Adjustables all round SLS-Already gone, I already have a 2.3-16 LSD as the donor was originally a 2.3 with a 2.5 swapped in. Bogg Brothers R1 Bike Carbs Megajolt control, courtesy of Dave_Irls now deceased project Possibly a stripped interior and half roll cage - haven't decided. Pacet Fan and New Rad And, a trailor. ![]() And as of this weekend, the car will be up on stands in a fully prepped garage, can't wait! (Neither can my parents! At least the drive will look less of a salvage yard!) Still have a W123 230E up for grabs and a W210 E300 TD which needs suspension mounts rebuilt if anybody is interested? Plus loads of spares from both W201 cars - see my for sale thread and inquire if not posted up. |
