Brilliant - for a while I thought that we had fondly upped the prices in our memories - however, after a few options it becomes clear that my 1993 1.8 Auto probably was, as my Dad told me, just under £24,000 new. You could spec a 1992/93 2.5-16 to about £42k+, I think. |

Perhaps this thread should be made a sticky - those prices are great for reference purposes. I'll add the 190LE prices tomorrow. |

So today (assuming 2% inflation), my £24k car would cost over £31k. I do remember the full-page ads in the broadsheets when the W202 was released, MB really pushed the fact that you could get into a new Mercedes for under £20k. £19,995, iirc

Interesting figures on the cost of these cars new, I think we should all give a nod to the first and second owners who have taken a massive financial hit down the years. My own 93 1.8 had lost £19000 by the time it came into my hands, so people, whoever you are I appreciate your sacrifice for my benefit Viffer |

The real benefit of that initial high cost - durability, quality - is being enjoyed by us, the people who are likely to have paid the least. Ironic. Another argument for buying a 190.

of course, a pound back then isn't worth the same as it is today, so maybe someone can adjust the original numbers to today's numbers, so we get a better sense of what we would have paid today, assuming our cars didn't deprecate, but hte value of the pound changed |

Thanks for posting the prices. To put things into perspective. In 1989, my 2.6 would have been around £23k. In the same year, I purchased a four bedroomed Victorian semi-detached house with loads of original features for £34k. Same house now valued at over £200k. There's a perfectly good 2.6 currently for sale on this forum for £800. Does make you think, doesn't it? |

The Daily Mail's "thisismoney" website has a great inflation calculator. For example, taking stempies figure for a 1993 190E 2.0 at £20930. That money today would be the equivalent of a shocking £29720 (!!!) which would get you a current generation C280 Elegance 4dr Auto at list price £29197 or the latest E250CDi SE at £28925 list price. http://www.thisismoney.co.uk/historic-inflation-calculator |

I'd say your right there. My 16V was £37650 in early '91 without full leather, heated seats, fire extingusher, air bag, auto and up graded stereo. If all were options ordered then the total would have been approx £42850! A W126 500SE cost £44370 plus delivery charges & stereo........................................ |
