Hello, I have a 190e that has done 217,000 miles and i have been getttng lots of sludge in the coolant tank. After about 20mins of running from starting it overheats and water and steam blow out of the cooling tank cap. Had it checked and it turns out to be a blown head gasket as suspected for which it would cost 1000 to repair. My question is as this car is only used 5 miles a day and is almost worthless is there anything i can do for a cheap fix to prolong it a bit? I have checked and oil is getting in the coolant and not vice versa i think so i would be looking for a product to put in the oil? Or does anyone know of someone who could do the head gasket job cheaper? I am in Cambs. Many thanks |

A grand sounds very steep for a head gasket. I haven't had it done myself but its not that much work. I dont think there are any quick fixes, perhaps tweaking the headbolts up a bit, that used to work on a series mini engines. I think first thing to do is get another quote. What engine ? Price will vary a bit. |

No quick fix i'm afraid. Where did you get the quote? thats expensive!! Why not do it yourself, i'm just about to do mine. Mine will cost around £150 to do which includes the Gasket Set (From a forum member), oil, filter and antifreeze and a head skim if it needs it. Loads of help on here if you decide to have a go |

Crickey £1000 is a bit pricey. Where abouts in the country are you? There will probably be another forum member near you who may be able to reccomend a garage near you. The Gasket set is £25 and the new bolts are £15 (GSF + VAT) a tube of gasket sealent and a large torque wrench is all the specilist tools you need. |

A grand for a head gasket on these is a ridiculous suggestion. ! It would take around 1/2 day and any parts the mechanic used would come to no more than 50 quid (prolly a lot less 'cos hes in the trade). If he needs to send the head away for skimming, I can't imagine that costing more than 100 quid. Go back and ask him why he feels he can charge this and is he in the habit of ripping people off. Also, post the details of the garage on here so we know to avoid the place. Ask a few other places for a quote. They should be able to give you an idea over the phone as a head gasket change is a straight-forward job. Anywhere that says: 'We wouldn't know without looking, can you bring it in'..Should be avoided. You should get a much more sensible quote with a little shopping around. Al |

Tried that, but was told it wouldn't fix my problem as oil has gone into the water not the other way around. Been told maybe stop-oil-leak might do it? and even 2 eggs in the oil!! |

It'll be about 30-40 quid to have the head skimmed. |
