having been asked several times,i thought i'd post a quick reference guide to running on veggy oil.so if a moderator can pin it please

WVO....waste vegetable oil(used)

WVO needs to be dewatered and filtered before it can be used, you have to filter it down to about 5 microns, then it can be treated the same as SVO

SVO... straight vegetable oil(new)

option 1) no modifications, just pour SVO straight into the tank, diluting when neccessary with either kerosene/diesel when the temperature drops near freezing.

option 2) run SVO in a diluted form all the time, diluted with diesel to a percentage that is suitable for you,ie. 30-70,50-50,70-30

option 3) adapt a electric heating element of some sort/heat exchanger to heat the SVO before it reaches the engine

option 4) to pay for a full conversion to a duel tank system, which in essence is the same as a LPG conversion,in that you start and finish on diesel but can switch to either SVO or WVO,the system comprises of another fuel tank situated in the boot, another set of filters, seperate from the standard fuel system,a heat exchanger unit and switch over valves, this can cost in excess of £1000

although no modifications are required, there is some advice i would give,as long term effects of using SVO and WVO arent known, this is just a precaution

change engine oil frequently and slightly more often than specs suggest,i recommend every 5000 miles,as polymisration of veggy oil can occur within the engine oil

change fuel filters regularly i would suggest every 4000 miles

and if you run 100% SVO i would recommend once every couple of months running kerosene through your fuel system, kerosene will clean and pick up any crap left by the SVO in the fuel system

All good advice, another tip is to learn how the engine acts when the filters are getting close to clogging. You will find at times it cant go higher than a certain number of revs.

As time goes on the rev linit will come down until its undriveable. As soon as you feel a limit you should change the filters. I like to flush through a little parafin at the same time which helps clean the injectors but MAY also bring ither bits down from the line and into the filters which you are about to remove. Dont know if it works or not but it seems a good idea.

Wvo should also be dewatered as best as possible to avoid damage to the injection pump. This is done by leaving to stand for as long as you can then pouring off the oil from the top. Minimum should be a couple of days really, although at a push you can risk 1. To do this safely you should really be leaving it 1-3 weeks. This should be done before filtering as the particles in it help the water settle (aparently) and will sink to the water layer which then wont clog your filters. There are other ways to dewater like a centrifuge or heating but most people simply use time and gravity.

yes any veg oil, rapeseed and soya are apparently better but tend to be dearer,as they finer and are used to in the production of methanol, which by the way also burns in diesel engines, gives more power but it has to be finely worked out otherwise to much and it will detonate your engine, turbo as the top geat team proved when racing that diesel bemmer for 24hrs

If you going SVO/WVO I'd change the oil every 3k to be safe. Personally I don't see the point of going veg if you don't run on WVO. You save SO much money. Yes, it's a bit of a hassle and you need to find a supplier, but it's also more rewarding and environmentally more beneficial. I have an additional heated fuel filter and I change that every 1500 miles; it's a 5-minute job; the filter costs £3; just to be safe. ;)

no not anymore, uptill april last year you had to,but then the law changed, you are allowed 2500 litres per year to use without being taxed, that equates to about 20,000 miles..........if you use more than 2500 litres you have to informt he goverment..............only requirement is that you keep all reciepts of veggy oil bought,so that if stopped by customs and excise you can prove you havent used more than 2500 litres ;) :)

unfortunately so, went from 55 to 75 in most places.

For a very cheap (£4-£8) filter heating option see this :-

There is also a basic mod to make the fuel go through the heat exchanger all the time :-
