Hiya

I have been on benzworld for a while now and finally found here aswell! Great forum and i have already been reading through masses of posts!

Heres my 190E 2.0 Auto. It was an ebay banger at christmas but since then I have done/added:

Clear indicators & repeaters
lowered and added alloys (from the second ebay banger I bought!)
painted the grill insert black
Then replaced it with an AMG one from the ebay banger
replaced the cracked dashboard
Blown and fixed the headgasket
replaced the cooling system
repaired the wiring (PO had hacked the loom apart)
huge amounts of polish :D
replaced hub carrier assembly
brembo rear brakes
swapped out exhaust

Many replacement parts came from another 190E i bought and got running but which ultimatly failed its MOT on a large amount of Rust.

The orginal rad :s not great really. These two photos are as I set about stripping the head off to put a new gasket in. It sent the head for testing and skimming!

The rad is from another 2.0 auto I bought (1983 model if i remember) that had air conditioning. The car was dead from rust (very long story, i did get it all working though!) so i then took all the parts i needed to restore mine. I took the air con fin set off the front to get the clean rad. In all this heat we have at the moment in traffic she warms up a fair bit (not sure what she should run to) even with a new thermostat. Running freely though its just above 80 at the moment. For heavy traffic conditions I have fit a bit bosch fan that came from the car with air con that I can just turn on and focibly cool the water a bit. I would rather run a little cold than always a little hot before which warped the head!!!

Glad you like her!

Nice work! As far as the temp is concerned, the thermostat is usually rated at around 82 to 85 degrees so the temp you have is about right for a well maintained cooling system. Running the car colder than this will reduce your fuel economy but may give you a tiny bit more power!

fuel economy or power.... hmmmm tought choice.... clearly I will always take power! Glad you like the engine bay, this car has definitly been a steep learning curve. Aiming to keep a mercedes as my everyday car but would prefer a manual. Bought this one to tide me over during some shoulder operations... maybe a 2.6 next year ;)

welcome Andy, i've been admiring your work on BW for some time!
(i really need to detail my engine bay!)

it's looking lovely, the electric fan is a tempting upgrade in smoggy sh*tty stop-start London.

I think its worth fitting, just gives you that extra edge over the heat. Its been a bit cooler today so didnt switch it on but I have no intention of overheating again! Making the brackets is quite straight forwards and the wiring is easy if you just want it on a switch. I used an old air conditioning switch i had. Going to wire up its little red light and run the fan through a relay to ensure its save to leave running buts thats yet another job!

Thanks for the kind words, I must say I want my wheels to look like yours! I have printed the instructions you gave on BW and they are in my tool box waiting till I have a few pounds spare to buy some paint!!

I love offset.

What a great first post Andy and welcome to the club :)

Love the work you have done, especially on the engine/cooling system. My 1.8 has a badly leaking head gasket and Ive had more than my share of overheating problems. Currently keeping her cool with monthly flushes and a big pipe bypassing the leaking heater matrix. But your way is much better

Great pics, keep 'em coming. Nice work again mate. :driver:

Have you not had water going into the oil aswell? One cylinder one mine was full of water when I took the head off! I love the wheels on yours, where did you get them? I havent seen another 190 with those one before. Very tempting!

Nope, my oil is perfect, but the coolant as half coolant half oil.

Cheers dude, I love them too! Got them shipped from Germany. :)

I really want a set of those wheels now, but i am not sure they would suit the grey of my car. Look awesome on black though!!

Lucky the oil is only in the coolant, although that cant help keeping it cold at least the rad wont rust inside!! The oil makes a right mess of the inside of the pipes though. I flushed mine through about 5 times with just water before I used Holts rad flush. The water then came out brown the next day and it took 8 more full flushes with just water until it ran clear! Worth it in the end though
