I had a brief look in my mercedes documentation :P

One of the most famous experimental cars on earth. The mercedes C-111 was built as a test car for the "rotary engine" built under licence of NSU. The car was first displayed in the 1969 car show in Frankfurt germany. The engine featured three rotors, wich they changed to four later on. Thus making the same displacement as a 4.8 litre piston engine. After noumerous testing the engine was not riliable enough and mercedes blew the project off.

Later on they changed the bonnet of the C-111 a bit and fitted an diesel engine to the car. Mercedes broke nearly all the diesel powerd records for the time.

Do you remember when the door fell on the guys head... man that must have been embarrasing for him!

That one you posted pics of V is cool! The nicest of an odd bunch..

I like the proper MB rear lights, and the grille at the front still resembles Merc styling.. That rearview mirror is genious, although if it was a bit wider and not as tall..

and if there was forward looking nightvision too... :ph43r:

You can drive this in Mercedes-Benz World Racing.

P.S. If you have not played this game: BUY IT!!!!!!!!!!

For PC and XBOX I believe. Now replaced by the totally inferior World Racing 2, so should be cheap.

Get it for £20 or whatever anyway, definitely worth it.

Great realistic handling and lots of fun racing too. You progress from 200CDI's right thru S320s, CLK500's, 32/55 AMG's up to the racing cars.
And that weirdo rotary engineed C111 thing posted here, as well as other odd concept cars.

No 190's alas but no matter it's still great.

I even made my own cars for it for a while.. like a E65 AMG, A32 AMG, 1000bhp S-class, crazy stuff like that.

Ahh that reminds me of Forza Motorsport, lots of Mercs in that..

I have an absolute monster CL with over 1000Nm of torque (or some crazy figure) and silly horsepower its a beast to handle on the 'Ring  B)

Not only have I seen one - I've DRIVEN one :D

Merc brought one over to Edinburgh for the W123 launch on 1976 and as I was reasonably well in with the dealership's workshop manager back then I managed to get a drive in it . Sadly , the one they had over had a diesel engine - but it sure turned heads !!

I was also fortunate at the launch event itself at Prestonfield House to meet the famous Rudolf Uhlenhaut - a charming and very knowledgable gentleman !

There were at least 3 distinct versions of the C-W111 , which was constructed as an experimental car . It was used as a test bed for the Wankel rotary engine , which with the material technology of the time , could not be made reliable enough to meet Mercedes-Benz standards . ( The Wankel also ran in a number of W107 SL sports cars ) . There were also a lot more built then most people realise - at least a few dozen - and quite a few have found their way into private ownership .

The 111 was also famous for testing the then new M-B turbo diesel engines and held the land speed record for diesel at over 200mph sustained for 24 hours . I'm not suer if theis has been surpassed . I think Merc also still hold the land speed record for a car on a public road which was attained on the then new German Autobahn around 1938 by one of the leading drivers of the day ( Von Brauchitsch or Carraciola) at some ridiculous speed . The car is hanging on the wall of the M-B museum.
