The generations in Chronicles lists the sons of David, with an inclusion of his daughter, Tamar, yielding 17 sons and a daughter. Solomon's sons were 12. These were the progressing generations of David and his son, Solomon. Solomon was David's 10th son, but was the one through whose lineage God would send the promised Messiah--Jesus. Note that in Matthew 1:7, it was Solomon's firstborn son, Rehoboam [Roboam] who would carry the bloodline to Christ.

In Matthew 1:1-17, lists the lineage of Jesus Christ... how He relates from Abraham to Jesus' earthly father, Joseph. In verse 17, it tells of three successions of 14 generations... from Abraham to David, from David to the carrying away into Babylon, and from the carrying away into Babylon to the birth of Jesus Christ.

In Luke 3:23-38, lists the lineage of Jesus Christ... how He relates back to His Father, God. These verses give us the listing of the generations from Mary's ancestry. Note that the listing is given in reverse order. Many of the names are repested in both listings because, like ourselves, when we trace our family ancestry, we learn that somewhere along the line, we are related to/by the same people. The differences in the spellings of the names may be, as simple as, how the birth names were spelled or recorded by the one keeping the records.

I will list some other scriptures that can be used as references regarding these portions of scripture:
Genesis 5:1-32; Genesis 11:10-26; Ruth 4:18-22; 1 Chronicles 1:1-4, vs.24-27, vs.34; 1 Chronicles 2:1-15; Luke 3: 31-34; Matthew 1:2-6; Isaiah 9:7; Isaiah 11:1, vs. 10; Genesis 49:10; Psalm 132:11, Jeremiah 23:5; Acts 2:30; Genesis 12:3; Genesis 17:19, ch.25:26, ch.38:27; 1 Samuel 16:1; 2 Kings 5:13, ch.5:38, ch.20:21, ch.24:14-16; 1 Chronicles 3:17; Numbers 4:3, vs, 35; Matthew 13:55; and John 6:42.

I may not have answered your questions to your satisfaction, but if you study all these scriptures and ask for God's wisdom [pray James 1:5], He promises to give it to you, "... liberally..." [generously].

May God bless you and open His word to you as you study it.
