Bible study ERJ Publishing LESSON #208 The Importance in Knowing the Word of God and How to Retain It BIBLE TEXT “12For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.” Hebrews 4.12 OBJECTIVES • To help every believer learn, know, and understand the Word of God. INTRODUCTION The development of new believers is a very serious thing, and it must not be taken lightly. One important ingredient needed for believers to succeed is to know God’s Word. Everyone who wants to know God must also know His Word—this, because it is the most common way He uses to speak to us. When we read the Word, it should not be a ritual or like reading a novel or newspaper; it should be given the respect it deserves because it holds personal advice given by God for our lives. “16All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, 17that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.” 2 Timothy 3.17 According to this verse, we know the Word was inspired by God. In other words, from Genesis to Revelation, God spoke to benefit, profit, guide His people, and to help every believer get closer to Him. To study the Word of God should be a priority and a moral value that we practice, daily. “13Till I come, give attention to reading, to exhortation, to doctrine.” 1 Timothy 4.13 In this verse, the Apostle Paul persuades his spiritual son, Timothy, to read and learn the Word of God. Why? Because Paul knew the best council a person can receive is the one that comes from God which is found in His Word. The Word of God has the power to encourage those who are depressed, to strengthen the weak, and to improve the quality of life for those who need it. “The words that I speak to you are spirit, and they are life.” John 6.63 The word for life, in Greek, is the word “zoe” which means: one who is possessed of vitality; the absolute fullness of life, both essential and ethical, which belongs to God; life real and genuine, a life active and vigorous, devoted to God, and blessed. In short, the life God wants for you—a successful life that only God can give. When we discover the council of God, our life is strengthened and improved in every area; this, because the Word of God: 1. Helps us to mature: when we realize what God thinks of us in a specific area of our lives and when we understand that we need to change to succeed, the process of maturity will begin. “For the word of God is living and powerful...” Hebrews 4.12 2. Helps us improve: The word powerful basically means the ability to produce the desired results; for instance: you know you must stop smoking for the Word of God says, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me;” and “Greater is He who is in me than He who is in the world.” When you begin to confess and believe what the Word of God says, then you will have the power to stop smoking. The following are three ways to retain and memorize the Word of God: 1. Read it: this is the most common and difficult of the three because over 70% of believers do not read the Bible on a daily basis. We must read and know what the Bible says. “39You search the Scriptures, for in them you think you have eternal life...” John 5.39 2. Repeat it: when we repeat the Word, over and over again, it is impregnated into our spirit. a. Write it down: When we read the word, we retain a portion of it, but when we write it down, we make it a part of us. “2Keep my commands and live, and my law as the apple of your eye. 3Bind them on your fingers; write them on the tablet of your heart.” Proverbs 7.2, 3 FINAL QUESTIONS According to 2 Timothy 3.16, 17, what is the Word of God good for? What two things are produced by the Word of God? What three methods are suggested to help retain the Word of God? How many of us will practice it? |
