Bible study by ERJ publishing FAMILY GROUP JULY 2007 LESSON #205 The Holiness of God BIBLE TEXT “1Therefore, having these promises, beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.” 2 Corinthians 7.1 OBJECTIVES • To help everyone realize the importance of living in holiness and sanctity • To recognize that without holiness, no one will see God • To learn what we have to do to live a life of righteousness INTRODUCTION “2Give unto the LORD the glory due to His name; worship the LORD in the beauty of holiness.” Psalms 29.2 Holiness is a lifestyle choice that can only be accomplished through total submission to God—in body, soul, and spirit. Holiness cannot be acquired simply by going to church or attending a family group; but rather, it is the burning desire not to offend God. In other words, it means we have finally understood that sin in our lives separates us from God. Jesus said: “Be holy as I am holy.” 1 Peter 1.16 God is calling us to live a pure and holy life. For this to take place, we must understand what the word means. Holiness is not simply choosing to do the good things we enjoy doing or that make us feel good; things like: helping our neighbor or meeting the needs of the widow; this behavior is a mandate from God, and when He speaks we must obey, like it or not. Holiness is the effort we make to please God in everything we do. “15For thus says the High and Lofty One who inhabits eternity, whose name is Holy: I dwell in the high and holy place, with him who has a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite ones.” Isaiah 57.15 Who has to live a holy life? There are no exceptions to living a pure and holy life; everyone must live it if they want to spend eternity with God— every man, woman, and child; young and old alike. The Apostle Paul tells the church: “22But now having been set free from sin, and having become slaves of God, you have your fruit to holiness, and the end, everlasting life.” Romans 6.22 Holiness Comes by Living a Pure Life What is the meaning of the word pure? In Greek, it is the word “hagnos” which means free of mixture or contamination; innocent. “3Who may ascend into the hill of the LORD? Or who may stand in His holy place? 4He who has clean hands and a pure heart, who has not lifted up his soul to an idol, nor sworn deceitfully. 5He shall receive blessing from the LORD, and righteousness from the God of his salvation.” Psalms 24.3-5 “15To the pure all things are pure, but to those who are defiled and unbelieving nothing is pure; but even their mind and conscience are defiled.” Titus 1.15 Everyone wants to live forever, in heaven, but the only people who will see the Lord are those who keep their hearts pure and hands clean of sin; those who do not deceive or use the Lord’s name in vain; those who have pure intention and motivations; and those who understand that without holiness it will be impossible to see the Lord. What Will God do to Sanctify Us? God sanctifies us through His dealings with us. The same way gold needs to be passed through fire to remove all impurities and turn it into something valuable, God must deal the same way with us in order to sanctify us. He will lead us through the process to eliminate the impure motivations for our actions and thoughts. In other words, He allows the difficult moments in our lives to help us learn and discern that which is good and holy and to help us realize that only through repentance will we be able to achieve holiness. FINAL QUESTIONS What is the meaning of the word “sanctity”? What happens if we choose to disobey and not live a pure and holy life? Who will see the Lord? What is the meaning of the word “purity”? |
