Fasting- Voluntary abstinence from consuming meals for a determined period of time Purpose: find intimacy with God; prepares you to receive God’s guidance "Even now," declares the LORD, "return to me with all your heart, with fasting and weeping and mourning." Joel 2:12 There are 3 types of biblical fasts 1- total-> without solid food or liquids Recommended when the Holy Spirit gives you instruction 2- Absolute-> with out solids but drinking water “Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the desert to be tempted by the devil. After fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry.” Mathew 4:1-2 Christ hungered 3- Partial-> Eliminating certain foods and drinks Could be partial in times also; for example, start at 6am end at 6pm Reasons to fast: 1- Honor God- Recognize God; die to the flesh 2- Humble and repent 3-When confronting crisis and problems After this, the Moabites and Ammonites with some of the Meunites came to make war on Jehoshaphat. Some men came and told Jehoshaphat, "A vast army is coming against you from Edom, from the other side of the Sea. It is already in Hazazon Tamar" (that is, En Gedi). Alarmed, Jehoshaphat resolved to inquire of the LORD, and he proclaimed a fast for all Judah. 2 Chronicles 20:1-3 4- Seek God’s direction 5- Develop spiritual sensibility/sensibility to the Holy Spirit 6- Release chains of iniquity in your life- Isaiah 51 We come to salvation after accepting Christ but there are still things in our lives which need to be cleansed, sins from our ancestors which caused curses on our generations: can be seen in families where divorce is common, sicknesses which are hereditary, abuse, depression, suicide, miscarriages, etc. 7- Release a prisoner – intercede on behalf of someone who is being attacked by the enemy “And he who had died came out bound hand and foot with graveclothes, and his face was wrapped with a cloth. Jesus said to them, “Loose him, and let him go.” John 11:44 The same concept as releasing chains in your life only this time you would do it for someone else, who is sick, who is unsaved, etc… Steps to fast 1. Proclaim the fast- tell God “Lord I declare a fast today...” 2. Define the fast- write down the purpose, it can be one thing or as many things as you need “Father I fast for …” 3. Ask the Holy Spirit’s assistance “Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.” Romans 8:26 4. Receive in faith, thank God before you see the result “If you believe, you will receive whatever you ask for in prayer” Mathew 21:22 -Remember he heard your prayer before you started “Now while I was speaking, praying, and confessing my sin and the sin of my people Israel, and presenting my supplication before the LORD my God for the holy mountain of my God, yes, while I was speaking in prayer, the man Gabriel, whom I had seen in the vision at the beginning, being caused to fly swiftly, reached me about the time of the evening offering. And he informed me, and talked with me, and said, “O Daniel, I have now come forth to give you skill to understand. At the beginning of your supplications the command went out, and I have come to tell you, for you are greatly beloved…” Daniel 9:20-23 Things to know . All authority has been given to Christ, is all His. Some things are gifts from God like salvation, but some things are His rewards. If you want rewards, like your prosperity, your healing, the salvation of your family, your nation, you need to fight it- by fight it I mean believe, the battle is the Lords. Our only job is to believe His word, and proclaim it in prayer and with our actions. If I believe God for my healing, even if I do not see it immediately I will declare myself healed in Jesus’ name daily, and when people talk about the illness I shall confessed that I feel this way now BUT he that delivered me yesterday, will deliver me today and will deliver me tomorrow “Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.” Hebrews 12:1-2 |
