The standards of the bible as i see of God are the teachings of Scripture. The Bible explicitly prohibits a believer from entering into any serious relationship or marriage with a non-believer. One of the first references to this is found in Deuteronomy 7:3, 4. Here the children of Israel were admonished not to marry the children of Canaan because "they would turn your sons away from following me, to serve other gods." Also after the exile of Israel, Nehemiah pointed out to the remnant (the surviving children of Israel) that the great King Solomon was led astray by his relationship with women who served other gods (Nehemiah 13:26, 27).

It is not only the Old Testament that teaches against this but also the New Testament. Paul says emphatically that believers are only to marry "in the Lord" (1 Corinthians 7:39), in other words to marry only another believer. He goes on to show that it is utterly contrary to Christ’s teachings to be involved in a serious relationship with unbelievers. Though Paul does not explicitly mention the topics of dating and marriage in 2 Corinthians 6:14-17, it clearly has meaning for such relationships. In this passage Paul points out that we should not be united with, or bound to persons who are contrary to Christ. Throughout Paul’s practical admonitions are echoes of Old Testament passages calling on Israelites to be separated from outsiders who did not recognize the God of Israel (Leviticus 26:12; Isaiah 52:11, Ezekiel 20:32-34).

Not only should Christians avoid dating and marrying non-Christians, 1 Corinthians 5:9-12 would seem to indicate they also should not become involved with people who say they are Christians but do not live godly lives. The underlying principle here is two fold. First, we belong to God and are called to glorify Him in every aspect of our lives (1 Corinthians 6:19-20). Secondly, wrong relationships can produce wrong behaviors, wrong standards, and wrong values (1 Corinthians 15:33). Recognizing this truth the Assemblies of God opposes the practice of dating or marrying unbelievers.

CONCERNS:

The church also expresses concern about a practice of some Christians who date non-believers so as to try to lead them to faith in Christ. In its ideal form the goal may seem pure, but such practice is biblically flawed and presents the Christian with certain risks. At stake are the Christian’s personal testimony as well as his/her own physical and spiritual well-being. Many who have involved themselves in such dating practices have unexpectedly found themselves caught in an unhealthy relationship, one without God at the core. Some have even chosen to marry unbelievers thinking they can win their partner later in marriage. Although there have been instances where unbelieving spouses have been won to the Lord, many Christian spouses have either been restricted in their faith or tragically fallen away from Christ as a result. Clearly the biblical rule of 2 Corinthians 6:14 forbidding yoking with non-believers suggests that dating to evangelize is not a practice for committed Christians. The biblical imperative for all Christians is to date only those who are likewise committed to Christ.

Dating is the means of meeting and getting to know our future mates; however, it should always be stressed that if you are a Christian, plan to marry a Christian and have a Christian home, you must only date Christians.

Dating can be done in groups where you are free to share many things on neutral ground... thus allowing you to learn about many individuals' likes, dislikes, expectations/goals for your love, marriage, home, children, etc. and you can share your views, as well. Many people put too much emphasis on the being alone with and/or the physical aspect of touching and kissing which should be kept and treasured to be given and shared with your one true love. We must pray about our future mates and wait upon God to bring them into our lives. Sometimes the most difficult part is in the waiting upon Him and His will for our lives in the area of love, marriage, and a Godly home.

Blessings upon all,

:amen: to a believer only dating other believers! It is so important to guard the heart (which is the wellspring of life) in male/female relationships and to keep all purity!

I once heard a very wise person say that we should only date a person we are considering for marriage. In order to do this, there must be a solid foundation of friendship first, and fellowshipping in groups accomplishes this with accountability.

Recently I read a book called "Not Without My Daughter"- it is a true account by the author (it was also made into a movie). I don't want to give the story away, but a Christian woman married a non-Christian, and she and her daughter found themselves trapped and held hostage in a foreign country. I will not give any more of the story away in case any of you want to read the book or watch the movie.

Also, I want to reiterate how important it is to know for sure that a person you are dating is truly a Christian, and preferrably a mature Christian. At one point earlier in my walk with Jesus, I was friends with a man who I thought was Christian. He claimed to be Christian, went to church, and read the Bible. I learned a lot from this relationship. Mostly throught mistakes! And one led to the next...

We had spent a little time in groups, but one day he invited me to volunteer on a farm. The morning we were supposed to go, I had a dream right before I woke up. In the dream, I became aware that I had actually made a date because there was not a third person going to be with us. So in my dream, I tried to call so I could cancel the plans....

Then when I woke up (watch how insidiously the enemy works), a thought crossed my mind, "You can't cancel these plans at the last minute- that would be rude!". I wonder who put that thought there!! So I went. Mistake #1

Well, I won't bore you with the long story of what all happened during the next 6 months, but during that time there were other mistakes made that could have been avoided if I had acted in obedience following that dream.

I learned that just because a person reads the Bible and prays and goes to church, it does not necessarily mean that the person is Christian! The Sadducees and Pharisees did all that, and yet they did not have the spirit of God in their hearts.

It is so important to guard the heart and to obey the word and use wisdom with all relationships. Choosing a mate is the second most important decision a person makes in their lifetime- the first is choosing to be with Christ for our eternal afterlife, the second is choosing your mate for the rest of this lifetime.

The hardest thing I suffered during this time of making mistakes was how it effected my relationship with Jesus, because I got hurt and my heart started to harden. I also started to lose faith and hope that the Lord had anyone out there who he was preparing me for or preparing me to be with as far as marriage. So I also learned a lot about forgiveness, but the pain I experienced just drove me straight to Jesus- I spent a lot of time alone with the Lord. I still believe that His perfect will would have been to spare me of all this, but He does give us free will and allows us to stumble.

I pray in Jesus' name that everyone reading this post will learn from this testimony, and may the fruits of love and patience from the Spirit sustain you until God brings your mate in His perfect timing so that your hearts will be protected and whole. Then your marriage will be so very blessed!

Love and joy to all of you,
May
