Dear Fouad, I enjoyed your article on Women in the Church. Well argued! However, the literary context of 1Tim 2:11,12 seems to be wider than your suggestion of marriage. It appears to be global - "all men (v.4); "men" (v.5) with the globality of one Mediator; "all men" (v.6); "men everywhere" (v.8); "women" (v.9); "women" (v.10) "woman" (v.11); "woman" v.12; and then the woman Eve as representative of all women (v.14)". In view of this context, how do you justify limiting v.12 to marriage? I agree the Gk. is ambiguous, but doesn't the literary context clarify Paul's intention? Also, could you please explain how you integrate Paul's teaching on male eldership and its authority - seemingly doctrinally linked to 1Tim.2:12 (as distinct from deaconate which you correctly observe can be female) into your interpretation? |
