I was watching this video and noticed that John plays a small piece of the intro of SFF in 6:09. I don't know if this has been posted before because i haven't been on in a while. It's a cool video i found it awesome.

It seemed he knew what he was doing.

i think its very possible that he had that progression that he liked for several years before he finally used it

from my personal experience, there are certain bass riffs that i like, but i have yet to use in a song

Thanks a lot, I've been looking for this video ever since I heard it existed.

Apart from the SFF note sequence:
"Their manager's name is Mr. Brian Epstein"
"Brian Epsteen?"
"The manager's name is Brian Epstein"
As my smilies pop-up won't open and ROFL is one bridge too far: haha.

Yeah, you don't come up with something like that on the spot.

Like Joe said, I think that maybe he had that riff for a while and didn't know when to use it 'till he started writing 'Strawberry Fields Forever'.

Some people do, some rock stars (John Entwistle, Kirk Hammett) come up with riffs and solos on the spot of the performance. And of course you know that jazz players constantly improv in their songs when there are solos.
