Talk about old music here. And I mean REAL old, like 20's and 30's stuff, ye dig?. Got any favourite artists from the pre-LP days? Do tell.

Most of the early artists I listen to are Blues, Folk and Jazz artists. Of the early jazz artists, I think Duke Ellington has got to be my favourite; his 20's big band material was off the chizzzain. Blues, either Charley Patton or Robert Johnson; both scary ass motherfuckers. Folk music; I reccomend the Anthology Of American Folk Music to anyone who wants to have a grounding in folk music; iSential.

So let's talk old music, y'all.

I think the earliest recording I've heard is from 1917; the Original Dixieland Jass Band playing on Columbia Records. Awesome stuff.

What about classical music? That's old school, mang. Real old school. But unfortunality I don't really listen to any music at all before the 60's... some 50's music (mostly the early rock stuff, but I don't listen to a lot of it), and everyone hears classical music being played in movies or whatever, but I don't really own any of it. But I can see myself liking some old jazz, blues and folk artists, I just don't really have any of it. But yeah, I dig it, dawg.

I mean old as in old recordings. Classical music sure is old but the first recordings of classical pieces were made around the same time that jazz and blues was starting to be recorded as well, often later.

Yeah dude you're right. But my last comment still applies I'm afraid. :(

Apart from some blues and jazz, the oldest stuff I can dig up from my collection is (a best of, so I'm not sure it counts, of) The Andrews Sisters.

I'm not sure when to situate them exactly, but I know their 'Rum and Coca-Cola' was a big hit during World War II, and 'Bei Mir Bist Du Shein' was a Nazi favourite, until they found out it was based on a Yiddish tune. So 30's - 40's? I like 'Civilization (Bongo, Bongo, Bongo)' the best.

Leadbelly is ancient as well - his last recording session was sometime during 1948, so I suppose the bulk of his discography must have been recorded in the 30's. His version of 'New Orleans (The Rising Sun Blues)', 'Where Did You Sleep Last Night' and 'Gallis Pole' are probably my favourites (and his most well-known songs), 'John Hardy' and 'When I Was A Cowboy (Western Plains)' are fun to listen to, too.

I can't really listen to old recordings just for the historical factor, when I can listen to a better-sounding album. My dad has a CD of this recent band that recreated all of the Little Rascals music with old instruments, and I really like the style, but it's not original, of course.

I never thought I'd mention that CD on the forum.

How bout this?

For a couple years (4 years or more) we have had my grandmother's (no relations, and she died at 105 in 2003) music. These are so old, they aren't even vinyl. Glass, one would think. It's heavier than a vinyl record (RECORD, not rekkid....dumb fucks), but anyway, there's about 12 of them, and they are all Tommy Dorsey. I checked up a bit on him on RYM, he was popular in Germany. Where she is from. Swing and big band is the genre and I might try to play them, although...I don't know if it'll work.

Blind Willie Mctell and Blind Willie Johnson are both amazing blues artists to come out of the pre-LP days. Benny Goodman's another killer jazz musician from that era as well.

I said that 'cause those two artists were not around before pre-LP days.
