What's the New Mary Jane?; And was Syd Barrett there?

Another belief is that the song was influenced by Syd Barrett, the early leader of Pink Floyd, who were recording at Abbey Road Studios at the same time as The Beatles in 1967. A long-standing legend states that Barrett actually appeared on and co-wrote the track, leading to the song's tenuous inclusion on many Pink Floyd bootlegs. However, nobody who was actually present at the recording has ever corroborated this.

Personally, I don't see Syd Barrett writing verses like "She catch Patagonian pancake / with that one a gin party makes"; the combination of "word play" (if you can call it that, it's merely playing around with word order) and really really random phrases seems to me like trademark Lennon.

However, a quick Googlesearch reveals some people claiming there's a version with Barrett on vocals (often named "What's the Shame Mary Jane?", which has that Oasisvibe to it). Anyone heard of this? Or think it's credible?

Hate me, do it and do it again.
Never heard that story, but that would explain why it's so messed up.

Lennon and Barrett? That'd be cool, but it's hard to believe it. I go with the first option.

Interesting topic. I've read the same article on wikipedia before, and it has made me wonder. Still, there's no real proof at all. I've never read any mention of Syd by John at all in any interviews, though I've never actually read every interview John has given. I personally think it's just a rumor, so I chose drugged-up Lennon. It's a cool song, anyway, but not really in the style of Syd's music.
