the smiths

pretty good, i had never heard the smiths before this, and for some reason i thought they were an early 60's, british invasion group, and when i found that they were one of those 80's bands where the singer always sounds like the guy from the cure, i was a little disappointed (edit: i should say that im not trying to rip on the smiths here, this is just the thought that pops into my head whenever i hear a singer that sounds like they could have sang "come on eileen")

definitely not my favorite type of music, but it was okay. reel around the fountain and miserable lie were probably my favorite songs on the album. other songs that stood out at me were pretty girls make graves, glove in hand, and what difference does it make. since i never listen to this kind of stuff, a lot of the album just sounded mushed together, making it seem more plain and boring than it probably actually is if i were to listen to it a few more times.

I'm not sure if I would say Neil Young is too much of my taste...just a little too folky for me. Cinnamon Girl and Down By the River were alright, but the rest weren't really anything great in my opinion, but Cowgirl in the Sand was very good. That's probably the one song from the album I will continue to listen to. It's got a nice melody and I love the guitar jams. :punk:
Now onto The Smiths...

Yeah. I don't think their debut is the best starting album for some folks. It's their most downbeat and lyrically unsettling, which is probably why I love it so. You're better off going with Singles or The Queen is Dead. Glad you moderately enjoyed it, nonetheless.

And lolololol @ Morrissey sounding like Robert Smith. Moz is much more vocally proficient.

Well, I'm about halfway through my first listen, and I'm not quite sure what to think yet. I don't really care for the singers voice, but some of the melodies aren't bad, but some of it seems a little bland. This is definitely something I will need to give many listens though, because I might end up liking it, like LZ222 said.

Edit: Well I'm about 2 full listens through now, and I'm definitely not liking it anymore. A lot of the songs are sounding very similar, and starting to get a little annoying. I definitely wouldn't say the album is bad, because some of the more up beat songs were a little better, like The Charming Man and What Difference Does it Make?, but I'm not sure if I will listen to much of it very often.

The Smiths- The Smiths

The Smiths **

Reel Around the Fountain- One of the more bland tracks I have ever heard. In my opinion, this is a weak opener and the lead singer sounds very detached. It’s pure plastic soul. Not much musical creative, however the song is saved from being complete garbage by an engaging melody. **1/2

You’ve Got Everything Now- This tune’s a little more rocking. The singer is just a topic I don’t want to talk about, and they don’t seem to be too tight of a band in terms on talent. ***

Miserable Lie- The lead changes up his vocals in this number. That’s not really a good thing. The drummer sounds like a drum machine. ***

Pretty Girls Make Graves- Ugh, more of the same…. Do I have to finish? **

The Hand That Rocks The Cradle- I don’t know. Great lyrics, same bland music. ***

This Charming Man - Is it coincidental the best song on this album is the shortest? Yes, I think so but in this song the vocals are surprisingly engaging and the song shows more overall passion than the ones before it. ****

Still Ill- Another pretty good track. At this point the album’s heading in a positive direction. P.S. in case you were wondering, the drumming still bores me. ***1/2

Hand In Glove- All I want is one drum fill… Please? However, this song is a keeping the rocking pace up, making it a little less bland than the earlier tracks. I liked this song for what it is. ***1/2

What Difference Does It Make?- Have I heard this song before? **1/2

I Don’t Owe You Anything- Same old same old. I’m not trying to rip on The Smiths, but thank God there is just one more song. **

Suffer Little Children- Good lyrics as usual, but there just doesn’t seem to be any creativity or talent flowing from this band. ***

I must say I was extremely disappointed with this album. I had heard a lot about The Smiths and had gotten my hopes up for them. Correct me if I’m wrong, but I don’t believe their drummer breaks off the basic rock beat once in the album… It is a drummer not a drum machine right? The lead vocalist, to me, does not belong in rock and roll, but some Broadway production, and he is extremely bland. Bland is the only and best word that describes this album.

It's kind of a sucky feeling to see one of your favorite albums get torn apart. :(

I don't find it bland at all. Then again, my musical criteria seems to be vastly different than yours. You seem to be looking for something that "rocks" and has good drumming. If that's the case, The Smiths aren't going to fit your bill.

I think the main problem with the album is that it's just too repetitive.

Yep, I didn't mean to put anyone's music down. I'm just actually trying to provide solid reviews. Also, yeah drumming means a lot to me because I've drummed for 9 years. I probably put more store into a band's drumming than most.

Speaking of drumming, I just got a new asshole torn for me compliments of my Dad. Maybe I shouldn't be playing at 2 in the morning. :dodido:

Everybody Knows This Nowhere kills the Smiths in my opinion. The Smiths I just found boring and repetitive. The lead singer makes me think I'm sitting though a boring soap opera. I had to torn the volume up high as hell to hear the music in the first place.

Hate me, do it and do it again.
I'm going to listen to The Smiths later today. Even with bad reviews I'm excited, because if it's quiet and sadistic, I'm sure I'll see the influence they gave The Belles.
