Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere - Neil Young & Crazy Horse I got pretty much everything I expected from an early Neil Young album: half introspective ballads/half rocking guitar songs all interspersed with Neil's beautiful voice (hey theres no denying the man can't sing after tracks like "Down By The River" and "Cinnamon Girl"). Just as I expected, he pulls it off with aplomb making this album a true classic. Before I mention the highlights, props must go to his backing band Crazy Horse whose dirty groove they keep is just magnificent and couldn't suit these songs any better Highlights: Cinnamon Girl, Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere, Down By The River, Running Dry (i actuall thought this one was the hidden gem of the album, amazing violin part) and of course Cowgirl In The Sand. |

I like "The Losing End" alot. It sounds like they had fun when they recorded it. It seems like a song that a group of your teachers would choose to sing at the school talent show that everybody records on their phones while the teachers dance and make fools of themselves. And I like that. ... Now Playing: Neil Young - The Losing End |

alright, I'm too lazt/stupid to write proper reviews, so I'll just quickly say my opinion of each album. Everyone Knows This is Nowhere by Neil Young For starters, I'm not a huge fan of Neil young. So, with that in mind, I found this album to be quite fair. I'll probably listen to it some more and develop a proper opinion. The Smiths Did not much care for it. |

Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere **** Cinnamon Girl - Not what I was expected from Neil Young, but I liked it. I do not much at all about him but I always envisioned him to be more of a country artist. The riff in here reminded me a lot of the Eagles’ hit Witchy Woman. It has an infectious melody to it as well. ****1/2 Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere- This is the more country flavored Neil Young I was expecting going into this. I was very impressed with this number until the chorus where I thought the backing vocals were sung poorly. Good song in whole though. **** Round & Round (It Won’t Be Long)- Neil lied to me. It was long. Too long. I think it would have been a better if the song was pruned down to about 3 minutes because the chorus got old by that point. The song had good lyrics and nice, tight close harmonies. That saved the song for me. *** Down By the River- This was an epic piece, and what seemed to be one long jam session with intermittent vocals by Young. I liked the guitar work; it was a good track. **** The Losing End (When You’re On)- The lyrics in this song are so true. Other than that I didn’t note anything particularly special either bad or good in this song. ***1/2 Running Dry (Requiem For The Rockets) I thought this was a good track, the best since the opener. It instantly gave me chills with the haunting strings section and haunting lyrics. It blended in perfectly with the monotonous sound of the backing band here. ****1/2 Cowgirl In the Sand - Now here is some refreshing rock and roll. Like Down By the River, it’s essentially a jam session, but this seems to surpass it in terms of cohesiveness. Neil’s vocal delivery is his best on the album, making for a great closer, and saving the album from becoming bland. ****1/2 In all, it is not a bad album although it walked the tightrope on becoming bland and repetitive at times. It was rescued by having a handful of solid tracks, but there is no standout track as far as I can see. It’s a cohesive effort, but a pretty lackluster unpolished one at that (which seems like that’s what Young was aiming at). It’s missing the one or two big tracks to push this album to another level. I know them all pretty well. But I know sometimes I must get out in the light. Better leave her behind with the kids, they're alright. The kids are alright. | |
