hey
|
I couldn't listen to the Gun Club because I can't unzip stuff. I'd give it a listen, and if I didn't like it then I'd just say so. There have been a lot of albums I haven't really cared for in this club, but there are still a lot that I have liked and will still listen to. I'm happy people gave mine a chance, because I knew a lot of you would like it. |

I'm curious to see how people will respond to World/Inferno. What, with them being a circus band and whatnot. |

Thinkin' one thing and doin' another
|
Gun Club - Fire Of Love I'd wanted to hear this one for some time, just because the concept of punk meets roots is pretty fascinating. And this album is fascinating; it is essentially a punk album, but the execution, the instrumentation and the lyrics is what sets it apart. The slide guitar makes the album; it isn't played in that "ye olde country" style. Instead, its a bitchin' fast rhythm substitute which drives this fucker like hell. Coupled with the drummers roots ethos (he sounds like he could be playing on a Johnny Cash record on Preachin The Blues or Black Train), this thing moves. But its not all at break neck speed either. Theres the steamy stop start number Preaching The Blues and Cool Drink Of Water, which I thought would have made a great closer. You can tell these guys have done their blues homework. The lyrics usually deal with some form of want, be it sexual (the terrific opener Sex Beat), want for a dependable someone (Promise Me) or blood (For The Love Of Ivy). Usually the lyrics are pretty abstract but theres some great lines: "we can fuck forever but you will never get my soul", "the sun behind me is a sexual red". Really, the only criticism I can find is that theres a lack of really memorable melodies or riffs but it doesnt really matter, its more than made up for. Favourites: Sex Beat, Preachin' The Blues, She's Like Heroin To Me, For The Love Of Ivy, Cool Drink Of Water. A great choice Aaron. 10/10! |

I think we're going to move on. Quite the review, though.

Love Will Tear Us Apart, Again
|
Sorry, I've been dealing with funerals and shit lately. I will download Gun Club and World/Inferno soon though. I've already listened to Fire of Love and it kicks ass, but a more in-depth review will come later. |

Fire of Love Wow, this is a great record. Punk/blues at it's best. The maniac vocals, the slide guitar, the risque lyrics, the energy....all awesome. I can definitely see the White Stripes influence, and this album surpasses all their work. Excellent choice, and quickly becoming one of my favorite punk albums. 10/10 Red-Eyed Soul An offering by an modern, unknown (to me) band from CSC. This spells trouble, right? Hells no! This is one of the best punk records I've heard in recent years. It's always great to hear bands use obscure instrumentation. Some great blending of circus/Irish music to the pun mix. The lyrics are political and biting, making this the soundtrack to some sort of clownish-uprising. As well as it should be-it's punx after all. Good choice. 8-9/10 |
