Yay! That album rocks.

And more people should've reviewed Wisconsin and Damnation.

I agree.

I think Wisconsin has had a good amount, but Damnation has had about 3. And should we delete some people who don't seem to be participating anymore?

If we could just join hands..
I haven't been able to participate because my father won't let me download things on this computer. My other is fried.
Mild apprehension.

You guys can count me out of this thing. A.) I rarely come here, and even when I do I don't download anything. B.) I don't have enough music to put stuff up here that you guys don't already have or that's reasonable and C.) I can't handle this kind of commitment! :fear:

Here's "Mode D - Trio and Group Dancers/Mode E - Single Solos and Group Dance/Mode F - Group and Solo Dance" by Charles Mingus, the last track on The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady.

So everyone here knows I'm not an avid jazz fan. Plus this is my first listen to this album, so bare with me.

The beginning is strange, drums come in, we have some instruments going and this really annoying honking in the right channel that doesn't seem to stop. But the the backing instruments match up with it now, and I'm surrounded by "wahh-wah, wuhh-wuh" and a solo going on in the left channel that's saving me from going crazy. This is the first time a drummer on a jazz record has caught my attention, doing strange things but keeping the beat. And now it goes into a sleazy, slow feel. I like this track because of the atmosphere, though many jazz tunes give off the same feel of being in a foggy city in black and white. The tuba keeps playing this same notes... hm. Changed as I said that. Now we get a solo, everything goes down a notch. One thing I will admit is impressive is the solo, it usually saves me from the boredom. But I think the real saving grace here is the drums, I'm really loving this guy's drumming. Especially since the solo sounds like a mother giving birth... which oddly isn't bad. I really like King Crimson and and this reminds me of something from them, like "Pictures of a City". Lovely little piano at the ending.

And track two starts us with a lovely piano intro! How nice. Feels like Christmas, something that Vince Guaraldi would play. Up and down, up and down, up and down, up and down. And the strange solos start again. DUN-DUN-DUN-DUN-DUN-DUN. That was cool. Again, this, like every other jazz song that's ever been stuffed into my ears, gives off a sleazy atmosphere that for some reason never gets old. It's speeding up. This drummer is a beast, haha, right with it every second of the song. The tuba drives me completely insane, though. I really love the piano on this one, I'm paying more attention to it than the weird whaling solos that are all over the place. About 4:20 (lol!) into the song the drummer wows me again as the weird sounding.. whatever that is plays. And now we're back in the groove. The good thing so far about this record is if there's something you don't like to listen to, there's something else to fall back on. The instrument that keeps going up with the beat is great, then it goes into some weird other thing as the song gets slower, quieter, and now it goes up and down, up and down, up and down. Great full circle there, as the song comes to a close. And there's the tuba. T_T

Piano! Again! I'm not complaining, I wish I knew how to play it myself. This and the last song have had lovely piano intros.. and now it plays some dark chord, and the instruments fall in. Piana' is still soloing and I'm still enjoying it. And now we have our chromatic scale entrance. Flutes, is that flutes? The piano on this one is great, and I like the thing the flute keeps playing when it comes in. Now it goes into the weird crazy stuff, as Ron Burgundy is in the back there rocking it on the jahzz flewt. And it slows into the same sleazy stuff every song has featured. This song has changed a lot, keeping it interesting. I miss the piano though. Now it's speeding up, as I hear my drummer lover. Now they're playing this one thing in octaves in the back as the solo keeps going and it slowly, slowly seems to get faster. And then the guy goes shit crazy on his own as the song ends. Now eighteen minutes left...

Hey, look! A piano. And here's that stand-up bass that always makes me uninterested. And now the solos and riffs that drag on and on in every song. wtf? A guitar thing in the middle of it all. Finally something to keep me interested. This is a lovely solo thrown in the midst of boring things. Aw, I wanted a Spanish Guitar solo for the next fifteen minutes, but sadly, everything else comes back. And the after some solo, solo, solo, solo, I hear everything STOP! And we get a piano solo again. <3 And I really like the flutes on here, they play some great little things with the piano throughout the album. Haha, and what seems like years after that, I hear the guitar strumming and picking away, which is definitely one of the highlights of the album for me. This song has a lot of different styles thrown in, but to be honest, it's not enough to keep me interested for almost twenty minutes - though that's probably just my impatient side shining through.

Overall I enjoyed the album, going in with a sort of open mind. The different textures splashed in was enough to make you hear things you wanted to, when you wanted to. While a lot of it did sound the same, just repetitive going up and coming down over and over, there were some great piano pieces and the Spanish Guitar in the last song was excellent. But I never really paid attention much to the sax and trumpets, or whatever those were, that ruled the album. I don't know what to listen for, but for the most part the things I did listen to surprised me. The drummer was really great, while he didn't seem to venture out, this was recorded in '63, so for the time it seems to be really excellent playing. I'll give the album the highest possible 7 out of 10, just because a lot of it seemed to drag on and the speeding up and slowing down and going up and coming down got uninteresting by the end of the album.

Great review Dean, twas nice. I'm surprised you didn't mention the end though, the drummer goes ballistic, fuckin' fireworks and everything with this fill that goes for about 6 bars and Mingus himself screams OOOHHHH YEAEAAAHHH!!!. Anyway, give it another few listens for everything to sink in, theres a LOT happening.
