I haven't heard enough fusion to judge, but Hot Rats is very, very nice.

I'm not that big a fan of fusion, it can get a little wanky at times but these are definetely worth getting:

Miles Davis: In A Silent Way, Bitches Brew, A Tribute To Jack Johnson, On The Corner, The Cellar Door Sessions (a box set but verrrry good)

Herbie Hancock: Crossings, Mwandishi, Headhunters

Pharoah Sanders: Karma

Weather Report: Weather Report, Heavy Weather

The Mahavishnu Orchestra (with John Mclaughlin on geetar): The Inner Mounting Flame

Come oonnn, do it

Now 100% more avant-garde than Ivan!
I have Bitches Brew and Weather Report's debut already, but not any of the other ones. That Mahavishnu Orchestra album was recommended to me, so I may listen to it some time this week.

It's pretty intense, John's practically playing shred guitar. You have been warned.
