I think this has been made before but this poll includes the major theories, which are:

* Natural occurrences such as

* a global pandemic

* a geological event such as massive flood basalt volcanism or the eruption of a supervolcano. One such event, the Toba Eruption, occurred in Indonesia about 71,500 years ago. According to the Toba catastrophe theory, the event may have reduced human populations to only a few tens of thousands of individuals.

* a gamma ray burst or other devastating blast of cosmic radiation. One especially deadly hypothesized source is a hypernova, produced when a hypergiant star explodes and then collapses, sending vast amounts of radiation sweeping across hundreds or even thousands of lightyears of space. Hypernovae have never been observed; however, a hypernova may have been the cause of the Ordovician-Silurian extinction events. The nearest hypergiant is Eta Carinae, approximately 8000 lightyears distant.

* an abrupt reorientation of Earth's axis of rotation

* a drastic increase or decrease in the Sun's energy output

* an impact event caused by the collision of a large meteoroid, asteroid, or comet with Earth. A common theory postulates that the extinction of the dinosaurs occurred approximately 65 million years ago as a result of the Cretaceous-Tertiary extinction event when a large asteroid struck the earth, producing atmospheric dust which blocked solar energy and caused a significant lowering of temperatures worldwide. Evidence for this theory includes a sedimentary layer of iridium in the geological record and a large crater in the area of Chicxulub, Mexico.

* a sudden change in the physical constants governing the universe, such as that created by a Vacuum metastability event

* the creation of a black hole on or close to Earth

* a universal Big Rip or Big Crunch ("Gnab Gib")

* Non-natural events such as:

* a nuclear or biological war

* a cybernetic revolt

* a grey goo inundation

* alien invasion

* Supernatural occurrences such as:

* an act of divine retribution or the Last Judgment. Many religions include beliefs pertaining to the end of time. The Norsemen believed that the world would end in a tremendous battle of the gods known as Ragnarok. In the Christian Bible, the Book of Revelation describes Armageddon, a final battle between the forces of God and the forces of Satan.

I don't think we're going to go out with a bang, but between a pandemic and a nuclear war... I like to think we have some sense, at least when it comes to survival. Or if not, some countries will run out of missiles earlier than others.

But pandemics... we've had those killing millions before, like the Black Plague that killed one-third to two-thirds of the European population in 2 years, and that was in the 14th century - trade and travel were rising, but far from where it is today; or more recently, the Spanish Flu. Judging by the panic SARS and the Avian Flu caused, we are not prepared. Think of the riots breaking out when the medics start giving antidotes to privileged groups because they have the right profession (or the right money).

THE JANITOR
Believe it or not, there has been some evidence of polar shifts and climate roller coasters in the course of the life of our planet.
Evidence found in volanic sediment has suggested that at least once in the history of our planet that the magnetic fields over the north and south regions or poles did in fact once shift and once again even today show signs of a future shift.
The magnetic fields over the northern and southern regions of this planet gently begin their move to the opposite position, moving around the equator then in relative quickness trade places so that the north pole is now south and south is now north; the earth, however has not been turn upside down, just it's magnetic fields, called geomagnetic reversal. This would leave the earth vulnerable to damage from solar flares and solar winds and other great climatic events which would certainly be quite devastating to all creatures.
Climate shifts are certainly nothing new really. The temperatures and "warming" of this planet operate in cycles from long periods of warming and drought to colder periods with greater precipitation. However it is so very obvious that industrialization and the actions of humans have drastically excellerated the atmospheric structures for the worse and our time is coming to an end my friends. We will not see the end and our children may not see the end, but the day with cometh.
We shall force nature to destroy us as we now are destroying nature.

Grey goo inundation? You mean like The Blob. I know it wasn't grey but that is interesting. But a "gelatinous rain" from meteors is certainly possible. Just not globally threatening. But tell that to Steve McQueen or the old farmer/town drunk that usually gets eaten first when alien amoebas attack earth.

I think by the time a comet or anything natural happens with Earth, humans will be so advanced they'd find a way out of it.

Funny, I got the title of this topic from the last two lines of the poem The Hollow Men by T.S. Eliot.

This is the way the world ends
Not with a bang but a whimper.

My physics teacher today explained to me about an equation that is used by scientists to find the chances of life existing somewhere else in the galaxy. He said that one of the things they take into consideration is the possibility that a species may advance so much that they destroy themselves. So far, it seems we will succumb to our own capacity for hatred and destruction. But perhaps are capacity for creation and charity will overcome. Only time will tell.

You start working on the global pandemic situation, and I'll start on the asteroid collision problem. C'mon everybody, there's work to do!

Not with a bang, but multiple bangs resulting in the destruction of all mankind.

what we need to do is progress drasticly in our ability and knowledge of artificial intelligence, so we can build a bunch of robots that act as humans and can interact with humans, and then we need them all to aim their energy discharge toward the sun, creating enough force to push earth ever so slightly away from the sun, stopping global warming

has anyone seen that episode of futurama?
anyone for tennis?
