i think there definitely should be a topic for The Who, the third greatest band ever (IMO)

pete townshend, one of the best guitarists ever, one of the most ingenious song writers ever
roger daltrey, one of the best frontmen ever, his voice defined their music
john entwistle, THE greatest bass guitarist ever, looked awesome in a skeleton costume
keith moon, one of the best drummers ever, was a maniac behind his drumset

^just when writing that, i realized that each member of the who is considered one of the greatest at each of their instruments(or microphone)

how many other bands have that? the only one i can think of right now is led zeppelin.
i guess cream too.

i think they wrote the best album of all time, Tommy.
right now though i am really into A Quick One

Pete Townshend is my favourite songwriter and my favourite guitar player of all time. Entwistle can't be topped on bass. Moon is my favourite drummer, for his personality and how he fit it into his playing. Daltrey is my third favourite vocalist of all time. I agree with your statement of how they're the best at what they do - they're an unintentional supergroup. Quadrophenia is my favourite album by them, because it's like a mix of Who's Next and Tommy.

Second favourite group of all time.

Incredible that even though half of them are dead, they can still make good music.

My third favourite band. They're simply amazing.
Keith Moon is my favourite drummer, and nobody's better than Entwhistle, my favourite bassist.
I used to worship Tommy, but now I'm a bit dissapointed of it, however Pete Townshend is still my third favourite songwriter of all time.

how many other bands have that? the only one i can think of right now is led zeppelin.

That's cus Led Zeppelin and the Who are almost exact replicas except that the bassist for Led Zeppelin isn't as good as Entwistle. Every other member handles their instrument (or mic) to the same level as the other (Pete Townshend & Jimmy Page, Keith Moon & John Bonham, Roger Daltry & Robert Plant).

-------------------------------------------------------------

I love the Who. They are one of my top 10 favorite bands of all time. Keith Moon is a very big influence on me for being one of the greatest drummer's ever. He really knew how to play like a god and I wish that one day I can reach his level.

Pete Townshend and can play a mean guitar and write some really great songs. He was crazy. Still is.

John Entwistle is hands down the best bassist to ever walk the planet (although I don't like his playing style too much). He plays a crazy bass solo on 'My Generation' and on almost every other song.

Roger Daltry is one of rock's greatest singers. He's got a great voice and a good style.

We've talked about this and it's true that they're very similar in set-up, but I have to disagree with some of that. Roger Daltrey & Robert Plant may look alike from afar, but Daltrey is the far better singer and Jimmy Page completely rapes Pete Townshend when it comes to guitar. However, you're right about the rhythm section: Keith Moon & John Bonham are interchangeable in the numer 1 and 2 spots as far as drummers go and Entwhistle is indeed the superior bassist, but isn't the arranger & multi-instrumentalist that Jones is. When it comes to songwriting, it's a bit hard to judge as both have their share of gems (and rip-offs), but collectively Led Zeppelin appear to be the superior writers because they have more than one person who can write worth a damn and never really wrote a bad album (something Townshend can't say).

Anyway, the Who are cool. I find them a little overrated on this board, but they're cool. Definitely in my top ten.

I disagree. While Jimmy Page is, well, complete sex, I like The Who for the fact that Pete Townshend never overused his guitar powers. It's not the main part of the band, like Pete said, "John played lead guitar and I would be on rhythm". And I like that.

But Jimmy Page is number two. :fear:

they were a very good rock band definitely one of the legends of rock, though it's tough to judge them in comparison to other great groups its obvious they were top class.

a couple things i disagree with though...i would have to say that i regard townshend mostly for his writing and his guitarring after that (eventhough he was a verry good guitarist)...i am pretty sure jimmy page is on a different level though, to be fair to him...i would have to say that i enjoy both vocalists a lot, but i tend to view daltrey as the more dominant singer who could become the face of an album like tommy for example...entwistle was a better player than jones, but as mentioned, i believe jones was a much more multi-talented musician...as far as the drumming goes, it's tough to say that either moon or bonham were the BEST drummers ever...but they were outstanding at what they did (play their particular styles and fill their particular roles in their bands) they played somewhat different styles, so it is tough to judge who is the better drummer...they were both legends though that is for sure

but yeah i think the who were/are a quality group and i would have to say i like all their albums, but obviously i would say they were at their best (imo) between 1969-1973 ish

That's a lie. Sure Neil had 300 drums, but I think Bonham and Moon both dominate him in thousands of ways. Even Ginger Baker is more interesting than Neil, to me.

I know Dean is entitled to his opinion, and I'm not going to try to change his views, but I don't know how anybody can dominate Peart at the kit in "thousands of ways." Although there is no fact to this at all, I can tell you one thing. Peart dominates both of them in the game of life.
