This week is gonna be a big week for music. First off, we have Oasis releasing their eighteen track best-of (or at least Noel Gallagher's perception of their best), Stop The Clocks, being released tomorrow. Next comes The Beatles' Love, which is basically 78 minutes of remixes of old Beatles songs done by Sir George Martin and his son. As if that weren't enough for back-catalogues on the same day, U2 is releasing their retrospective, U218, a collection of 16 singles plus the Green Day collaboration 'The Saints Are Coming' and a new track, 'Window In The Skies'. Westlife, a popular boy band with fourteen UK number one singles to their name (but utter commercial failure everywhere else) is coming out with their eight studio album, The Love Album, which is actually a strong contender for number one thanks to a large population of pre-teen girls. Yet another big artist, Tom Waits, is releasing a three-CD set of "24 rare and 30 brand new songs" called Orphans: Brawlers, Bawlers and Bastards. But if you thought we were done with the retrospectives, you were wrong. George Michael's Twentyfive, a collection of his greatest hits plus a few new tracks celebrating the 25th anniversary of the start of his music career, is currently riding high at #1 in the charts, and might stay there. Heck of a week for music no? Who do you think will win the battle. Personally I think Love will do it, seeing as it's sort of 'new' while most of the other contenders are releasing retrospectives (though Oasis and U2 are offering exclusive DVDs with their releases, which may shift the balance a bit). Westlife could very well do it too, seeing as they're like the Backstreet Boys of the UK only they haven't disappeared yet (to my dismay). I doubt George Michael will keep the top spot, and I don't think Tom Waits will go higher than #5. We'll just have to wait and see. Here's what George Martin has to say: Contact Music - LATEST: Legendary British producer SIR GEORGE MARTIN is confident the new BEATLES album will outsell OASIS' greatest hits compilation when both albums go head-to-head tomorrow (20NOV06). Martin, who was the Fab Four's original producer, believes The Beatles' LOVE will triumph in the battle of the back catalogues. Love has been produced by Martin and his son GILES, and is the soundtrack to The Beatles-inspired Cirque du Soleil show of the same name, while Oasis' effort is an 18-track collection of the band's greatest hits. Although full of praise for the GALLAGHER brothers, Martin believes STOP THE CLOCKS can't match The Beatles new CD of experimental mixes. He says, "I think the Gallaghers are very talented people. They are a very good group indeed, but not as good as The Beatles." Martin and son made the disc after the surviving Beatles, RINGO STARR and SIR PAUL MCCARTNEY, alongside JOHN LENNON's widow YOKO ONO and GEORGE HARRISON's widow OLIVIA, approached him to create a Beatles soundscape for the show, which debuted in Las Vegas, Nevada in June (06). |

In case anyone is thinking of moving this, it belongs in General because most of the releases are retrospective so someone could use music from many decades as support for their vote. |

But it's a music DVD, no video. It's just for someone that wants to play the album over their DVD player. |

Companies need to cash in quickly on the first real holiday shopping week, huh? The Beatles of U2 will win probably. |

Gotta love George M. I have no doubt that Love will win - and I am excited to know how it turns out, as I am not very fond of Oasis. |

I think more of myself as a song and dance man.

I hope LOVE is number one. I can't wait to hear it. Apparently one of the tracks is called Gnik Nus (Sun King backwards). I can only imagine what that might sound like. |

I really like it. I only finished the album a few minutes ago, and it's late so I couldn't play it loud, but some parts are very impressive. Gnik Nus was interesting. |

I heard once that the Gallagher brothers said once that they would never release a best-of or compilation album while they were still active as a band. If this is true is kinda contradictory heh. Maybe Mike knows about this. Well I hope Love wins, I listened to it yesterday and thoguht it was great. |

Yeah, Noel said they would never release a best of until they were done. But Sony basically said 'fuck you' and decided they would release one in time for Christmas. Gallagher couldn't do anything about it because Sony owns the majority of the rights. Noel was given an ultimatum: Either you do it, or we do it. Noel said he rather select the tracklist, name it, design it, etc. all himself instead of having some studio execs do it. I'm pulling for The Beatles or Oasis. |

From the UK music magazine NME: Oasis take on The Beatles in UK album chart U2 and Westlife battle for top slot too Oasis are all set to take on their heroes The Beatles in the UK Album chart - while U2 and Westlife will also be battling for the top. Four of the UK's biggest selling bands all release new albums today (November 20). Oasis and U2 are releasing greatest hits albums 'Stop the Clocks' and 'U218 Singles', while Westlife release 'The Love Album' and The Beatles issue their eagerly-awaited 'mash-up' album 'LOVE'. And nationwide music chain HMV predict that the eventual victors are likely to be U2, though Oasis are strongly tipped to top the chart after the first week of sales. HMV's spokesman Gennaro Castaldo told the BBC: "Christmas starts here as far as music retailers are concerned, as it's not everyday that some of the world's biggest ever super groups have albums out. "It's going to be close to see who comes out on top, but we reckon Oasis's 'Stop The Clocks' will go to Number One by the end of the week, though U2 may look to sell more copies of '18 Singles' over the next month, or so." |

Since Endless Wire sunk down the charts (boo), this is an easy poll to me. I voted Love, and I hope it wins (although Tom Waits' new album is supposedly really great, but I didn't buy it yet).
