Hate me, do it and do it again.
It's almost that time of year where snow falls from the sky, you wear 20 layers of clothing and still long for summer, we reach a new year, we give gifts to love ones and recieve gifts from loved ones. I'm talking about the Holidays. We have a radio station here called 'The River' that plays nothing but Christmas related tunes from the end of November to Christmas, and I love it. But I was wondering what some good Christmas songs and albums are, so I can have a nice playlist on my iPod. I'd love for uploads, reccomendations, whatever you can do.

Thanks, and Happy pre-Holidays.

I love this topic.

Phil Spector's Christmas album is pretty much undisputed as the king of Christmas albums.

A Charlie Brown Christmas soundtrack is great Christmas jazz music (piano trio).

I think personally Christmas songs are some of the greatest songs ever written.

I agree, the tune "Sleigh Ride" is so brilliant. We're playing it in the school band and I love it.

Thanks for the reccomendations, too, searching uTorrent at the moment.

Usually, iTunes Essentials does a pretty good job gathering the great ones, so you can work off of those. If you have digital cable with Music Choice, the Sounds Of The Seasons channel will help you get some good ideas. Wikipedia also has a good list. Christmas music has variety, just like every other kind of music.

Classical: Tchaikovsky's The Nutcracker is pretty great.

Traditional songs: Songs like "O Holy Night" and "Greensleeves" are great, but everybody and their mother made there own versions, so you have to find the ones that are right for you.

"The Classics" - Songs like "The Chistmas Song" and "White Christmas" are essential.

Rock N Roll - All of the rock artists want to have a hit single just in time for Christmas, right? Examples: Chuck Berry's "Run Rudolph Run"; Elvis' "Blue Christmas"; John Lennon's "Happy Xmas (War Is Over"); Queen's "Thank God It's Christmas"

Jazz - Usually just jazz versions of famous Christmas songs.

Children's Songs: Frosty and Rudolph should get mentioned.

I'll upload a couple of my CDs for you one day. In the mean time, watch and listen to one of my favorite Christmas songs.

I haven't heard that much so of course my favorite is "Happy Xmas (War Is Over)" by Lennon, but I also like McCartney's "Wonderful Christmastime"

But I'll probably listen to the ones that you guys have recommended.

Look out!
Sufjan Stevens is releases a five volume CD set called Songs For Christmas. It is Sufjan doing old and new Christmans songs. It comes out pretty soon, and I can't wait.

Christmas songs are some of the most brilliantly composed songs.
The chord structures, dynamics, melodies, and overall richness of each woven piece accumulates to a brilliant composition that completely captures the tone of the season.

There must be dozens of Christmas albums that I'm in love with and too many to name, but these specific names come to mind when I think of perfectly executed Christmas songs:
Nat King Cole
Bing Crosby….the entire White Christmas film blows my mind…I love it to death.
Vince Guaraldi Trio (Charlie Brown Christmas)

Dozens more, but those specifically stand out at the moment.

Those are the first thoughts that entered my mind. "A Christmas Gift For You From Phil Spector" is the greatest Christmas album of all time.

I just picked up A Charlie Brown Christmas, and it's fantastic.

The Beach Boys' Christmas Album is also a personal favorite.
My Beatles Trading Post (Updated Regularly)

"George had just come off tour, I'd flown in specially from England, Ringo had flown in specially, too, I think, and John wouldn't show up! He wouldn't come from across the park! George got on the phone, yelled, 'Take those fucking shades off and come over here, you!' John still wouldn't come over. He had a balloon delivered with a sign saying, LISTEN TO THIS BALLOON. It was all quite far out." -Paul McCartney

apart from the obvious, Happy Xmas and Wonderful Christmastime by John and Paul, I strongly recommend.....

Elvis' Christmas Album [1957]
is the album that changed christmas music forever, definatley the greatest and most controversial christmas album ever released.

Elvis has done amazing renditions of Christmas songs, while still preserving the classic feel of them.

THE JANITOR
If you are a fan of Jimi Hendrix at all, try to find his version of "Little Drummer Boy/Silent Night/Aud Lang Syne" medley. It is not that good but it is interesting to hear a couple of times.
Here are a few other oddities that are great to listen to around this time of year:
The Twelve Days Of Christmas - Stan Freberg
Green Christmas - Stan Freberg

Christmas Eve/Sarajevo 12/24 - Trans-Siberian Orchestra
A Mad Russian's Christmas - Trans-Siberian Orchestra
These two are among my favorites on this album with Christmas/Sarajevo usually getting a fair amount of air-play from now until New Year's. I think it has been remixed and edited and this 1996 album version is the better.

No doubt someone else will agree with me and mention The Kinks singing "Father Christmas" and Greg Lake singing "I Believe In Father Christmas", which has had a few remixes and rereleases as well.
There are tons of good Christmas songs and I have a strong sentimental and emotional attachment to some of the traditional songs sung by the Ray Coniff Singers even more than my persuations to the rock and roll Christmas tunes.
Good hunting and enjoy the season!
