I think sometimes to prepare for war is to create an illusion working towards peace. But directly, no. |

Um, no. Clearly no. Although, maybe their might be peace once everyone is done fucking killing each other. But other than that, that statement is idiotic. To prepare for war is to prepare for a lot of death. |

I don't understand how preparing for war is also preparing for peace. You don't plan a big parade for winning something you have yet to win. |

Historically?? no In the end there's a winner and a loser. There is a big hatred between each other, loser wants revenge. Exemples: WWI and WWII. War never brought peace to the continous wars from the XV - XVIII century. In fact, in that period of time,I don't think there was peace among europeans countries for more than three years before another war started. |

But when you create arms you could be forcing others into peace, kind of as a warning. Unless both of you are stubborn assholes who can't pronoune 'nuclear' |

How about the American civil war? The urge for revenge gradually faded without any build-up for another war. And the Japanese in WWII instead of formulating revenge and further conflict, emulated the US economic and political systems and are now staunch allies. |

In the second half of the 20th century the east and the west prepared for war in a bigger way than ever before (nuclear weapons) but there was no war... except a cold war... and Korea... and Vietnam... hmmm... okay... |

It wouldn't have really been a war. It would've been more of an extinction. I'm not gonna judge Cicero's intelligence by that one quote, seeing as times have changed, but it really doesn't apply to nowadays at all. The Islamic extremists prepared for war the moment they decided to re-establish Israel in Palestine, and 50 years later, there isn't even a glimmer of hope for peace. |

We certainly DO NOT need any war today since we have better resources and we depend on different things. But in ancient times I think the quote rings true. If you didnt have a good army to defend you then you were DEAD. You wouldnt have a chace. You'd be butchered or sold into slavery and youre city would be burned to the ground. There were always people trying to take advantage of each other. Sparta for instance had the best system. The best war is the war you DONT fight. That was Sparta's attitude. Their whole society was based on war, honour loyalty, and obediance. Spartans NEVER fight unless they really have to or there is a just cause. In the case of the Athenians (in their heyday) they llike dto take advantage of other peoples wealth and resources. They wanted to conscript people in their great navy. Each city they conquered were given a brutal ultimatum. Surrender or DIE! Of course its better to die trying than to give up without a fight. The Athenians thought they were doing things "For The Good of the empire" but they were really harming others. The British are another good example of this. Even the Romans who greedily went on conquests for the sake of wealth riches and new territory. But just think what if things do go wrong today? What if the things we depend on suddenly collapse. Give me some scenerios. I think madmax is a pretty good and realistic scenerio if some nation with all their nukes decides to blow up the world. |

That might've been a plausible statement before a little thing called the atom bomb was invented. |
