another one i really like is lou adler. he produced the mamas and the papas' albums. which, by the way, if you've never listened to their albums you should. john phillips is the most underrated songwriter/arranger i can think of.

It's gorgeous in its dirtiness. Kinda like the Factory Girl type described on Beggars Banquet.

Oh yeah I totally agree, I've just heard countless numbers of people telling me that the production is too 'muddy' and the voices are buried in the mix.

Jeff Lynne. He brought everyone back.
The Everly Brothers (Story Of Me), George Harrison (Cloud 9, Brainwashed), Roy Orbison (You Got It, Heart break Radio), Dave Edmunds (SLipping Away, S.O.S) , Tom Petty (Full Moon Fever, Into The great Wide Open, Highway companion) The two are easily his best albums. He produced Pauls' Flaming Pie! Ringo Starr! He was in the Traveling Wilburys ELO The Move Idle Race. He produced Real Love and Free AS A Bird!

The same kind of people who think Bob Dylan's voice isn't good. The dirtiness/uniqueness of some things brings out the true greatness. If you're focusing on how the mix is too muddy, you're not listening to it right.

There's this little trick I like (and I would like to use more often) which I'm sure I didn't invent but I'm sure it isn't very common now:

I like putting the vocals low enough in the mix so that you can't really understand the words the first time you hear it, but after repeated listenings you realize you've memorized the lyrics subconsciously.

It doesn't always work, usually it's best in songs where you've got a lot of stuff going on and a lot of different layers, but I think it's a great technique. It's also a bit tricky because you can actually bury them too much or not enough, but it's really cool when someone's listening to a song like 15 times saying 'what the fuck's he singing!' and then they find themselves singing some of the lyrics at work later or something. DIG!

George Martin and Frank Zappa. The last one practically lived in the studio.

The fact that this thread has gone two pages with no Brian Eno shows how intelligent some people are here.
