Good band? Sure.
Great band? Maybe.
Best band of the 70s? No way.

You know, they had some hits, and in my opinion, that's enough. But honestly, if you think ELO is the best band of the 70s, then you are missing out on... pretty much everything else.

Hate me, do it and do it again.
Yeah, "Don't Bring Me Down" isn't enough to be the best band, although I do love that song. :cigar:

Quite true, the 70s were a pretty productive period.

But don't take me wrong, I love ELO. :cigar:

MMMmhhh Ohhh yeah this time I HAVE to agree WITH MANY OF YOU, I love ELO but there's so much more in that decade to listen, good stuff. Perhaps in their own gener (oh you know the word) they could be the best ...

But a side of that very statement, ELO has some great material and they were fucking great :peace:

BTW I'M BACK BABY, YEAHHH !!! :headbang:

I like ELO, but to me they're one of those compilation groups, where all I think I'll ever need from them is the one or two disc greatest hits album. Unless someone can point me towards an album that is really, undoubtedly, the pinnacle of the group.
My Beatles Trading Post (Updated Regularly)

"George had just come off tour, I'd flown in specially from England, Ringo had flown in specially, too, I think, and John wouldn't show up! He wouldn't come from across the park! George got on the phone, yelled, 'Take those fucking shades off and come over here, you!' John still wouldn't come over. He had a balloon delivered with a sign saying, LISTEN TO THIS BALLOON. It was all quite far out." -Paul McCartney

I like ELO, but to me they're one of those compilation groups, where all I think I'll ever need from them is the one or two disc greatest hits album. Unless someone can point me towards an album that is really, undoubtedly, the pinnacle of the group.

Jeff Lynne produced many tunes that were hits, but they usually lacked that extra something that would knock me out. I think some of his layering of sounds also worked against some (many?) of his songs. For example, "Don't Bring Me Down" was a good song to sell a lot of singles (if it even was a single) but the "wall of sound" was so thick that it made the song feel more sluggish than it could have been.

I have only heard 3 or 4 ELO albums. I think "TIME" is pretty good. It has that ELO sound (that I don't really like) but less so than the other albums I have heard. It also has a variety of musical styles. The ballad "Ticket to the moon" is a great song but then it gets kind of ruined when it transforms from a good piano song into that "big ELO" sound. The song "Here is the news" has a style in parts that reminds me of the general style of techno sounds that didn't become big until much later (in the 90s?), and this song was 1981(?), so maybe Jeff was ahead of his time here...

On a different album, "The Diary of Horace Wimp" is a pretty fun song - reminds me of McCartney's story telling... like combining "ObLaDi" with "Maxwell's Silver Hammer" kind of thing...

Another song that is pretty good is "Can't get it out of my head". I don't like it much now, but when I first heard it, it was great.
I speak good English. I learn it from a book.

'The Diary Of Horace Wimp' sounds to me a lot like 'Dear Prudence'. The chorus has the same style, guitar effect, and scale.

Now listening to "Fire On High"
"Turn back. Turn back. The music is reversible"
Or something like that. From the moment I heard that song, of course anyone can tell the power it will have over you.
Forwards or backwards, it is a fantastic song!

"The Dreamer. The unwoken fool. In dreams, no pain will kiss the brow.
The love of ages fills the head. The days that linger there in prey of emptiness, of burned out dreams.
The minutes pouring through the years. The universal dreamer rises up above his earthly burden; journey to the dead of night. High on a hill.............in Eldorado."
When she walks she moves so fine like a flamingo
Crimson dress that clings so tight She's out of reach and out of sight
