1967 was such a great year for the Beatles. Penny Lane, Sgt. Pepper, Strawberry Fields...

I haven't checked, but off the top of my head (and to be really picky), I thought "Strawberry Fields Forever" and "Penny Lane" were recorded in 1966... was "When I'm 64" also recorded in 1966??

But, yeah, 1967 was a good year for music. There was the sonic wonder of "Flying"

'Flying' is a genious song.

But I prefer 1969, because of hte singles, the albums, the individual work

The Strawberry Fields/Penny Lane sessions started late late late 66 (like december 29 i think) but only the very basic track was laid down for Strawberry Fields in that time. John wrote the basic melody while shooting How I Won The War which was late 66 but yeah, it wasn't completed till early 67.

As for When I'm 64, I'm pretty sure that was recorded during the Pepper sessions although it was one of the first songs Paul wrote; he was around 15 or 16 when he wrote it.

sessions began in november '66. the recording of "strawberry fields forever" was completed that year. "penny lane"'s recording sessions ran into 1967. "when i'm sixty-four" was more or less completed in 1966, as well.

It's a shame Brian didn't live long enough to see all the great things the Beatles accomplished afterwards.

I think it's interesting how Mal Evans is mentioned so often in Beatles history, but people rarely talk about his death.

"Depressed over the breakup of his marriage, Evans locked himself in his bedroom with an air pistol. His live-in girlfriend called the police, who shot him several times when he refused to drop the gun. He died instantly."

I read most of that. It's pretty long.

I liked the part where Mal writes about the prostitutes doing a lesbian show for the Beatles and all.

Quote:

To mark the news in 1964 that the Beatles had reached No 1 in the US for the first time, Mal writes that Epstein threw a party at the hotel. Some journalists then hired prostitutes to provide a lesbian show for the Beatles in the room next to Epstein's.

"It was a little unnerving to have these ladies performing before our eyes with each other in one room, with Brian, George Martin and his wife and the rather more staid members of the press in the adjoining living room. I guess celebration caters to everybody's different tastes."

I might just agree with you on that. The echo of the vocals in the right channel add to the feel of the whole song. I love it.

It's my favourite Lennon vocal ever. Like seriously, I think their debut is home of his best vocals. Maybe Help! could be just a bit better, but the debut is much more John-oriented, so yeah.

Anyone know why the Beatles don't have their own station on satellite radio? Maybe it has to do with difficulty getting the rights?

I've just finished reading Geoff Emerick's book, "Here, There and Everywhere" about his time recording and engineering The Beatles' music. I recommend that everyone who is interested in The Beatles read this book. I have read probably about 20 books on The Beatles and this is one that I think is important because of the unique position that Geoff was in to observe and interact with The Beatles. Unlike the majority of books about The Beatles, this is written by someone with first-hand experience. He didn't just know The Beatles; he worked with The Beatles, so is part of the John-Paul-George-Ringo-GeorgeMartin club, especially for his important work on Revolver and Sgt.Pepper.

Near the start of the book Geoff writes a little about his own background, which is interesting... I just mention this because some readers might feel like skipping this section of the book, but I think it is good to read to give some insight into Geoff's technical and musical interests and skills.

A very unusual thing about this book is that Geoff says both nice things and bad things about most people he discusses. This suggests that he is trying to be honest and objective based on his own observations, rather than going along with often-portrayed image of the individual Beatles as derived from their roles in A Hard Day's Night.

I have read one of George Martin's books ("Summer of Love", I think it was called) but there was really very little new information for me in that book. Geoff Emerick's book is far more detailed and interesting.
I speak good English. I learn it from a book.
