Roll the Bones was my first Rush album. I liked it for some reason. Now however it doesn't make an impression on me; they're just a load of pop songs based around a faulty theme of gambling. Some of the songs were cringe-worthy, others true, shimmering masterpieces, such as Bravado and the usual songs people praise from the album, Dreamline and the title track included (The rap section is fine. At least it doesn't have someone rapping "yo yo nigga wut im neil peart, n' dey call me duh professuh imma tap dat azz wut wut wut yeah"). Some of the weaker, almost irritating songs include Face Up, the ending track "You Bet Your Life", and "Heresy". Heresy is a fine track on its own but it is too similar to their other songs. That is all. |

ahh, where to start with rush. ...well, i guess moving pictures! rush reminds me of prom. i had that album playing over and over driving all over the place (picking up my tux, picking up my date, picking up the broken pieces of a haunted shadow too late...). "yyz" is probably the greatest rock bass performance i've yet to hear. and therein lies the problem with rush. instrumental virtuosity! mixed with sub-standard writing skills. like any band, they've got their share of gems (songs, not albums). but consistency! ahh, consistency. rush were not made for such a thing! no, no! rush leave a bad taste in my mouth when listening to them for more than a few songs. it's fun to hear the band interact and play amazingly. but even that can become trite when faced with the stretched-out, repetitive, lack-of-ideas "xanadu" or some other 10-minute epic. i don't play them much at all anymore; i used to just listen so my jaw could drop at neil's mastery and such (i have a fascination with drummers ever since i saw keith moon play the isle of wight in '70, and neil blows me away), but now, discovering a myriad, a plethora! of new music, i say simply, "meh." they were good when they were ripping off led zeppelin. in. my. humble. opinion.

Dude I totally agree with you. Instrumental virtuosity mixed with good songwriting, that's what makes the legends. The Who and Zeppelin are perfect examples of this. Rush has a lot of the first, not much of the second. |

THE JANITOR

I recently got a copy of Steve Morse playing "La Villa Stangiato" which is not bad. He also recorded a version of "Red Barchetta" but I don't much like it. Do you hear me Jeorgie? Carp? Check out the cover sometime. |

"Begin the day with a friendly voice a companion unobtrusive..." Magic at my fingers. Undemanding contact in my happy solitude. Invisible airwaves. All this machinery making modern music. Glittering prizes, endless compromises. Ain't that the troof Geddy. Aint it da troof. Now listening to "The Spirit of Radio" by Rush as instructed by JeorgeMcStarkey and satan. |

By far, my 2nd fav. band after Floyd, although they are coming very close to taking the #1 spot. I was at the PNC show last night, absolutely incredible. So fucking loud too. My ears were beeping up until like 4 AM. It amazes me how these guys have been around for 33 years and can still play with that much energy, Alex was smiling a lot and doing little quirky things, and Geddy did his infamous one-legged hop many times. Even Neil smiled during the last song in the encore. I bought an S&A 2007 World Tour t-shirt... I was planning to get some CDs there if they had them, but they only had S&A on CD there, which I already have. The ticket said 7:30 PM, but they didn't come on until around 7:45. They played 11 songs in the span of 1 hour for the first set, and took a 25-minute break, beginning at 8:45. They came back on at about 9:20 and the show ended around 11:15-20 PM. I met up with 8 adults from The Rush Forum after the show ended, that was fun. Here's the setlist: Set 1 Limelight Digital Man (vault extraction, they re-arranged it a bit) Entre Nous (excellent) Mission Freewill (very good as always) The Main Monkey Business (new song) The Larger Bowl (new song) Secret Touch (this kicked ass) Circumstances (Geddy nailed the vocal here) Between The Wheels (excellent) Dreamline Set 2 Far Cry (new song, rocking) Workin' Them Angels (new song, very nice) Armor and Sword (new song, my favorite from S&A) Spindrift (new song, heavy, probably the loudest they got all night) The Way The Wind Blows (new song, amazing) Subdivisions (i got chills seeing this one live) Natural Science (amazing) Witch Hunt (fantastic) Malignant Narcissism (new song, quirky) Drum Solo (Neil finally switched up his solo a bit) Hope (new song, acoustic, Alex was the lone player on this one) Distant Early Warning (vault extraction, outstanding) The Spirit of Radio Tom Sawyer Encore One Little Victory (very cool) A Passage to Bangkok YYZ (great ending) ~ Rush, Fly By Night, Caress Of Steel, A Farewell To Kings, Power Windows, Presto, Counterparts & Test For Echo are NOT represented here at all. ~ Entre Nous = first time played EVER on this tour ~ NINE songs out of thirteen from the new album Snakes and Arrows 10/10 show. Anyone who has the chance to see Rush, GO SEE THEM. It will blow you away.

That was fucking awesome. When they came out on stage and played "Limelight" I was like, "Rush. Are right there. I'm watching them." I wanted to cry. I liked participating in cheers from "The Spirit Of Radio". I liked the new songs, but playing five in a row kind of killed the crowd, but then they came right back with the classic "Subdivisions". I'm glad they played "Circumstances" but I couldn't tell what it was at first because it was down-tuned. Same with "Between The Wheels" which was slower than usual. "Natural Science" was great, and people we're leaving to get food during it! "Tom Sawyer" energized the crowd -- that first note is monsterous. I'm glad they've replaced "Summertime Blues" with "Distant Early Warning". Anyway, it was awesome. The only weird part about it was my brothers and my brother's friends that weren't as "educated" in Rush. I would have to supply them with the album facts. My brother's friend knew about "Witch Hunt" and how he liked the intro, but he asked me what album "YYZ" was on! By the way, I think I did see you, Nick. Here are my facts that I've gathered. - In the parking lot before the show, behind a car - With a man and a woman - White shirt, red graphic on the back - Glasses - Brown hair I couldn't tell if it was the 2112 shirt, and I didn't really want to stop my brothers to talk to a potential person that I know from forums. |

Well, that was probably me. I do wear glasses (looking to get contacts soon), I had a white 2112 tour t-shirt on, I do have brown hair and I was sitting with my Mom behind our van a couple of hours before the show... and I think I did see a group of guys pass at one point. The man my Mom and I were talking to is not related to me/us in any way, his name is Tim, really cool guy, he told us that he's seen close to 30 shows and he's been to multiple shows for every tour since '77 for A Farewell to Kings. That was sweet. And then I met this guy after the show was over, I was talking to the guys from The Rush Forum, and this big dude came over and said Hi to one of the peeps from TRF, and the one guy (Ken is his name, from TRF) said "So how many shows have you been to now buddy?" and the big dude goes "176!" My jaw dropped. This guy has seen Rush 176 times, he said his first show was all the way back at the Fly by Night tour in 1975. That is impressive. |

Yeah. The five S&A songs in a row is a bit overkill. I wouldn't want that kind of treatment for any album. Other than that, it's a very nice setlist. I'm glad that they're able to pull out some classics from the vaults like Entre Nous and Circumstances. I was kinda hoping they'd do Twilight Zone, but meh, maybe next album. I doubt it. Hahaha. I bought tickets for the September 17th show at the Garden. I only wish they were playing the Theater, though. I hate the arena.

My gym teacher from high school is the same way. He's seen them at least twice on every tour since Hemispheres. If someone were to say Rush have the best fanbase in the universe, I would not object. |
