I've been dying to make a topic about the band Rush. Now that I have it made, I want to know what you think about them. If you don't know any of they're music, I may have to change that. :cigar:

I will talk about them once somebody else posts, because I don't want to type alot of things for nothing. :nerd:

Sadly, since this is a highly based Beatle forum, I doubt there will be anybody with the capacity to go beyond and reach out to this fantastic band, but we can't do anything about that, can we?

Anyway. Rush... I didn't quite know what to make of them at first. They had a highly guitar-driven sound, combined with some unusual lyricism in comparison to other bands of the time, but they intrigued me. In the end, Rush is one of the finest bands ever to come out of that idiom that we call "rock n' roll", stretching a little bit beyond typical basslines, conventional drumming and love lyrics.

More impotantly, however, Rush is a band that isn't afraid to compromise their own audience and appeal for the sake of attempting to push into territories that interest them, not the listener. As the lyrics to their stunning song "Anthem" say: "I wrote this song for me, and not for you". I suppose this goes for their highly synthesizer-laden era as well (Power Windows/Hold Your Fire), and I highly doubt that they used synthesizers for simply selling themselves out. I wouldn't think that any band is stupid enough to think that synthesizers mean big money (No pun intended on the band's song of the same name).

I've always felt Geddy's voice was fantastic, even in his high pitched shrill of their debut and Fly By Night. I suppose that would be one of Rush's most off putting facets, but Geddy is really what makes Rush a unique sound, and I've always associated Geddy's voice with that of the Greek god Apollo: Intellectual, wise, articulate and uncompromising.

It's a bit hard to pinpoint what my favorite album by them is (Although certainly not Hold Your Fire or Counterparts, I can tell you that much!), but I would say either Hemispheres, 2112, or Presto.

I think I'll stop there to leave room for discussion.

Hey thanks "guest". If that is your real name. What a contrived poke at some of the members of the forum. But I'll play along and type some opinions about the band Rush.
Are they "heavy metal"? Are they "progressive rock"? It does not matter to me what critics or the music industry have labeled them, it's just "interesting music". Part science fantasy, part lovely word imagery. The staccatos and synchronous rhythms. The ominous bass suites and positively perfect guitar fills. Let he who does not enjoy the music of Rush abandon all hope of finding few, more satisfying pleasures.
The band is far more than "Tom Sawyer" and "Working Man", which are so enjoyed by many burnouts and ex-old ladies smoking in the bowling alley. "Witch Hunt" and "The Weapon" are fabulous entries in the Fear journals.
So much about this music is worth your interest.

Sadly there are people out there who not only are afraid to show their face but also say stuff based on pre-concepts; you don't know the people in here, nor their musical tastes so stfu.

I've just got into Rush Jeff you know, but so far I like it a lot, I'll try to get more of their albums.

(well I don't think it was "candy")

How can we describe the differences in Rush's synthesizer laden late 1970's and the synthesizer laden late 1980's? I mean Geddy was playing synth the whole time but is it now a prejudice against most 80's music or was Rush's music really suffering? And is that a reason why the band's touring decreased in the 80's?
Signals was the last Rush album that I truly enjoy listening to all the songs. "Power Windows", "Presto, "Roll The Bones" and even "Grace Under Pressure", for me are examples of albums that are only half good and perhaps lead to a solo effort from Geddy.

My top five Rush studio releases:
5. Grace Under Pressure
4. Moving Pictures
3. 2112
2. Permanent Waves
1. Signals

(clears throat) Uhmm Jethro Tull's 1984 release "Under Wraps". Pure unexcused synthesizers and drum machines. Completely out of character for those guys.

Anyway back to the Rush discussions. Carry on then.

Nothing is quite out of character for Tull, because I don't feel they ever really had a distinct genre that they adhered to, to begin with. But I suppose you're right, because if there was one thing that all their albums were expected to have, it would be some sort of gritty, pure and genuine sound. I'd have to say "Stormwatch" was their last great release until 1991's "Catfish Rising", which was a sort of bluesy return to form in my eyes.

Then again, who are we to determine Tull's intentions for that (abhorrent) album. Some bands jumped onto the 80's synth bandwagon, others stuck to their guns, and those that jumped onto the bandwagon either succeeded or tainted their musical sophistication.

Yes' 90125, however, is a COMPLETELY different story... As was Genesis' transformation from a theatrical tour de force to another pop group.

But yes. Rush "Happy Hour", kids. Let's talk about Geddy Lee's huge nose. Or argue over whether Neil should have left his moustache or not. Even better, let's marvel at Alex Lifeson's transformation from the slim, blonde Canadian seen on the back covers of the "Fly By Night" and "2112" LP's to the fat git he is now.

1. Geddy's nose - I have no explanation regarding his nose, but I don't want this thread to be a fight over religion...

2. Neil's Moustache - It was cool I guess for the time (2112 - Hemispheres), but if he had kept afterwards, it would have been a major problem. He tried to get it back during Moving Pictures-Signals and it just looks like a chocolate milk moustache. What is not exceptable is Neil's RAT-TAIL during Grace Under Pressure and Power Windows. (Click links for the wonderfully disgusting pictures!)

3. Alex's weight - He started to get fat around Hold Your Fire and Presto, and just lost it afterwards. Now he's fat AND bald.

I'm assuming you saw Neil's horrid rat-tail from watching "A Show of Hands" and "Grace Under Pressure" then.

I refused to believe that was Neil at the skins. All in all, A Show of Hands somewhat disappointed me, not for the performance (Although I don't think it was nearly as invigorating as Exit... Stage Left or Grace Under Pressure) but for the music that was played: It was mainly Power Windows and Hold Your Fire, two of my least favorite albums by them. I believe I had a headache from the trite synthesizers on all of the songs.

I wonder how it could have occured to them to extend the length of the songs on those two albums to no less than 5 minutes, as well. Listening to Hold Your Fire for the first time was a chore for me.

He had one in A Show Of Hands? I thought he just had the short hair? I have to watch it again. Did you get Replay X3? It's a great deal at only twenty-five bucks.

I was basically counting down the days until the release date displayed on their official website.

I hate how "A Show of Hands" replaced the incredible "thunder-drums" introduction to Force Ten with a fucking cartoon. :i
