it is you sir who are being a bit naive. I know this is off topic, but this is just ridiculous. people can to America because they were undereducated and couldn't survive in Europe?? English Puritans settled in America because of inequality. They were very well educated. Other immigrants came to America because of inequality, NOT their lack of education. Germans came to escape constant warfare, Irish came because of a famine, many came because America simply had more resources than Europe and the quality of life was better at that time. I can't tell if you were kidding or not?? i never can with these online forums...but if you were not, that is a complete overgeneralization and simply false. |

America is a democracy in the new form of the word democracy meaning free and fair elections ...(i'm not talking about the whole "bush stole the election" crap, i'm talking about real elections where the military, government, bureaucracies don't fix them) human rights, rule of law, and people influencing government decisions. I know it's not a "true democracy" in the greek sense, but it's pretty good. Of course we have problems, we always have...but I don't think they are any worse than other decades. People tend to forget the troubles of the past when they criticize the present. Politicians were and still are corrupt, humans rights were and still are violated, the government was never and will never be perfect...etc. humans are not perfect, therefore their system of government will never be. But I think America has a pretty great system in place despite this, and I am SO glad I was born here instead of countries with huge problems like Russia, Iran, Nigeria, China, etc. etc. |

So well said! I think our problems today seem magnified because we are the ones experiencing them. They are OUR problems and therefore issues that inflame us. But right, are they any better or worse than living through the Cold War? Than living through the Depression? Everything seems worse when it's happening to you! I'm the first to admit that I complain about America more than my fair share at times. I'm constantly saying that I would prefer to live in Europe (and I still would), but people I know in Europe would prefer to live here and I'm sure that we all suffer from the 'grass is greener' effect a bit. Someone said we're all spoiled- god yes. I keep telling kids I work with that all the time. To appreciate what they have because they have no idea just how good they have it! But, going back to the original question, IS America a democracy? We are technically a constitution based federal republic with a democratic tradition. |

Question: you are from Croatia right? Doesn't that country have a huge rich/ poor divide? Isn't your unemployment rate somewhere around 18%? i'm just curious, i'm not knocking your country. I just want to know from a comparison standpoint. |

The United States isn't a bad country. I admit, there are times when I'm quite critical of it, being in a country that is affected slightly by it's descisions but doesn't have to live with them. There's no doubt that it has some issues which need to be worked out...whether it be borrowing billions of dollars from China, getting into a deeper hole by the day, or simply overdoing everything. But what's that have to do with democracy? Haha, I don't know. As far as I'm concerned, yes, The United States technically has a democracy...but that isn't to say the the U.S is perfect. I'm very proud of where I come from.. but I wouldn't complain if I were born an American either..they have it pretty good. |

To the people who say America sucks: This is a democracy you kow...if you want you can change it. Start a movement or get invovled politically. We have it rpetty good here, you know. I'm glad I live here as opposed to South Africa or Mexcio or somewher else. To those who say America is super-awesome: Yes, America rocks, but there's still some things wrong with it. We are spoiled sometimes, but wanting civil rights and such is NOT being spoiled. "I should be able to love my country and still love justice."-Jimmy Carter |

i honestly, 100% belive that the country is run by corporation, and there for it is run be the rich. I belive that big profet corporations have more of an influense on poloticians then the american people. Sure we have a bit of a say, BUT, they will only listen to us till they are elected, after that, they do what ever they can get away with, ala nixon. |

I was just joking about the USA and yes, we are one hell of a dump to live in! We suck! The only thing that keeps us going is tourism! We're in millions of dollars in debts! Out of 4,5 million people we have half a million unemployed! The fuel prices are getting higher! You CAN'T knock us down because we're already at the bottom (I'm not counting Africa, Ukraine and similar ones)! But we don't have a huge rich/poor divide. We have middle class, you know.
