MrPerfect, I merged your topic with Jeff's because they were identical. Merging is the kinder alternative to closing/deleting a topic, so I hope you don't mind.

But what if, in the distant (or not so distant) future, there is a time when downloading music and movies through the Internet becomes so much more popular that we can no longer find good, older music, physical copies and releases to look at and hold in our hands at music stores because those artists have become so much less popular amongst those foolish enough to receive everything they hear about music on the Internet?
We all know that the next format to deliver music will someday replace the compact disc but what if that next format also leads to never physically having the music at all. True that the music is all we really hear regardless of whether it is tangable and has mass. But what if that includes complete indifference towards the art of the music, knowledge of the music and all that is left is a file to play on your computer or mp3 player or whatever the next system will be to deliver cold, lifeless memories of ghosts we once could touch? Oh. Hold me. Hold me.

Damn. I'm sorry. These pain pills get me a bit emotional. (using hands to fan the tears streaming from his eyes, a la most drama queens) Uhhhh. downloadin' is bad. Mmkay? Pe ...People who download ur bad. Mmkay?

Has anyone every used the free download offer from Ticketbastards I mean, Ticketmaster?
They offer 50 free downloads at emusic.com and I wondered if any of you have tried the service and how successful you were when canceling your membership once you used them just for the free D Ls.

I think the artists have a right to choose. People like Metallica don't want people downloading their records. They've sold millions and have millions in their bank accounts, but that shouldn't matter: they don't want you to download their records. Then there's people like Anton Newcombe of The Brian Jonestown Massacre, who put his entire discography on his website and has had millions of downloads. Even though he's not rich and has actually been homeless most of his career, he wanted as many people as possible to have access to his music. The way he saw it, he would let the music speak for itself and it would create a fanbase big enough that he could sell forty dollar tickets to a show and fill up thousands of seats in places they'd never played before. It worked, and he's doing pretty well now. The Arctic Monkeys were another band that used to give away their shit for free before their record companies convinced them otherwise.

I think it should be up to the artist. I wouldn't care if people downloaded my music, because I'm confident that my music will build up a large enough fan base to make good money on tours. Maybe what these artists are afraid of is that you can download albums like St. Anger, say "Man, this record blows compared to the older stuff", delete it, and not go to the gig. Downloading music is now pushing artists to make the BEST music possible, because believe it or not, most middle class music fans will go buy the records of the artists they love most to support them. But they will only love you if you put out good music, and as long as Metallica doesn't put out another Black Album, that is, an album that can speak for itself, they will fight the music downloads.

Good points, Mike. I would rather be a fan of many different genres/artists/albums etc. so I can have a broader education, therefore making me able to be successful at whatever I do later.

Also, with sites like YouTube, anybody and everybody can easily watch videos with songs, either music videos or live concert footage, whenever they want, for free.

By the way, Metallica plays to sell-out crowds every night they play, so I think they're set for a while.

Ok, guys. I know you all think I'm a nazi about these things, but when you say that you're just wrong. Yeah, I buy my music. Ok? So what? You download your music, so what?
"But Bill, you're always telling us how wrong it is blah blah blah" Uh, no I don't. I don't care about "wrong" when it comes to how you get your music, I just don't do it. It's illegal, that's all I have to say. Does that mean I'm telling you to stop? No, it's like saying just because I don't do it because I don't like it. Like saying you don't like bike rides in the park because you can't ride a bike. Do I hate people who download music? No. I don't tell you how to attain your music. I don't like it, yeah, but who cares what I say? Do you think your parents enjoy it when you masturbate? (Yes, it's that obvious) No, but who gives a flying flip?
I don't do it because it's illegal, that's it. Does it mean I'm perfect? No, I still don't occasionally make my bed or mow the lawn. But do I care what other people say about it? No.

And if you're wondering why "you always seem to be talking about it"... uh, there's a whole freaking topic called "downloading music", and tons of posts about "you know you should send me...", well of course I'm going to talk about it. So's the next guy and the next guy and even your mother if she was here.

So I'm not a strict-ass nazi about these things. So if you want to play a childish game where you make fun of me for a bunch of pointless made up crap, have fun.

I don't say anything. If people want to give me marijuana, I'll say "no thanks". If you want to give your friend some marijuana, go ahead.

Do I ever say anything about you guys sending stuff to eachother?
