Do you download music? What's your point of view on it?
I downloaded heavily last year. It's how I got all of my music. I thought:

1. Why buy the CD, spending money, if I can get it for free?
2. The artist barely gets any money from a CD anyway.
3. It's how I find out about alot of bands.
4. A lot of people do it.
5. What if I waste my money on a crappy CD?

So, back in January, I figured that I'll buy CDs now, because:

1. It's legal.
2. Cover art and packaging is nice.
3. When I'm old, I'm going to want to listen to CDs, instead of crappy mp3 files.
4. They're better quality.

So, now I've started downloading again, but not in mass amounts. I'm only downloading individual songs just to get to know some bands that I definately wouldn't buy CDs from. Also, downloading music legally from iTunes is one of the dumbest things I think I've ever heard of. If you're going to buy music, get the high-quality CD, not some okay-quality AAC files that you could've gotten for free. So now, if I get into a band, that I think is very good, I would definately support them, and buy their new albums when they come out. Also, those used CDs at music shop that people buy and think they are supporting the artist...no. The CD was already bought, and some dude is just trying to make money off the CD he ripped to his computer. You can think of downloading as borrowing from a friend... that you don't know. Do I think downloading music is stealing? No. Here's why:

I have all of Led Zeppelin's albums - My friend let me borrow Led Zeppelin IV, I copied it to my computer, and I downloaded the other ones I didn't have. My Led Zeppelin IV was free, but it was still legal. My other albums that are downloaded are free, but illegal...

Oh well. What do you think? (Yes! You finished reading my boring story. Congratulations! )

I download most of my music but I also buy what I can on vinyl.
Those are my principles, and if you don't like them... well, I have others

I buy most of my music on CD but if I want to test out a new band or just hear one song by an artist, I'll download it. If I like what I hear, I'll then go out and buy a CD. I like the actual act of going to a shop and getting it, or ordering it off the net and getting a package through the post. Having something in your hands is just more satisfying, and you can look at all the artwork, read the sleeve notes etc. Plus, I don't feel like I'm screwing over the artist. I hope to be a musician someday and I'd certainly prefer people to buy my music rather than downloading it for free off the net.

I think seeing an incorrect label on a song is the least of your problems...

I download more than what I buy, but I just can't afford to spend that much money, there's also the fact that I can't find a lot of stuff on CD but I do found them avaible to download.

Hate me, do it and do it again.
I used to. Never whole albums, I've got around 25 or 30 songs and that's it. I don't any more, I really love the owner's pride of having the CD and case, booklet, ect. And when someone sends me an album over MSN and I like it, I'll buy it someday.

I believe in doing what I can.
Yes, I download music off of iTunes on occasion. But I still feel that Downloading it doesn't give you the pleasure of owning the LP or Disc.

i'd never download complete albums, i think it's sort of unloyal to the artists because of all the work they put into them as objects, besides the music (sgt pepper's is a great example). if i want to get to know a band i usually ask everybody i know if they have an album and borrow it, and then if i like it i'll save up and buy it. if nobody has any album i will probably never get to know the band, although some times i download the songs i like most (or somebody's recommended me) of the album i'm most interested in and (if i like it) save up and buy it. when i already own an album by a band and i like it i usually download a lot of songs and see whether i like the rest of their work. and if i have many albums i'll probably download some songs anyway just to send them to potential fans or to listen to them on my comp (it's easier than going downstairs, looking for the cd, waiting fo windows to read it, selecting my favourite songs, name them--------------------). besides, when you own an original cd you can make ppl listen to it and see the cover and lend it and all that kind of stuff.

Me and you are seeing eye to eye here. You took the exact words out of my mouth. i love downloading, because music that you just got to have or want to listen to NOW, are at your finger tips and not a hastle to go out and buy. However, it hasn't stopped me from buying albums and supporting groups i love, it never will. i have ALL of the Beatles CDs and a few Vinyl albums as well as books ect... and other group's CDs as well. So its not like im a cheap skate and Pirate endlessly. im also a musician, and try to figure out different songs, and i've found it easier to deal with on a computer as well as having something to listen to while browsing round.

Im wondering however, if they still issue singles these days?? Because it would help the one's that want one song from an artist, that don't want to hear the rest of the shitty album with crap filler-fluff, and if they do, why don't they sell them, or make them as easily accesable as the fucking albums?? i know, in Chicago, there's this old record store called Rolling Stone and they have a bunch of rare and great stuff, and they usually have singles from the latest stars, but it's only one store at an odd location, so why don't they have them at Boarders or a chain store where more shoppers frequent ???

My rant on downloading music.

Everybody that says that downloading music is really bad is pretty much wrong. I have a few reasons for this. When you go to the record store, you see all of the old, used records for a few bucks each. You can listen to them, enjoy them, and even put them to your computer with today's tecnology. The same goes for used CDs. They are about half the price as new ones. This is legal. How is that? How about if an artist has died? Should other people get money off of the dead artist's work? Then all of the people say that the artists lose millions of dollars. Well, the record companies get more money than the artists. Artists get their money from concerts and merchandise. When and if you buy a song from the iTunes Music Store, the artist gets about ten percent of the download. Apple and the record companies get the rest. How about YouTube? If I want to hear, say, "Billie Jean" by Michael Jackson, I can hear it, as well as see the video of it, easily, for free, and legally. How do you figure that one out? I can record a radio block of Led Zeppelin if I wanted, for free, and use it for my personal use, and nobody's gonna care. Why is that? How about video? I can tape a TV show, or even an unedited movie from HBO, for free and watch it as many times as I want.

Just quoting you to open dialog once again.

Crimson dress that clings so tight She's out of reach and out of sight
