a lot of it has to do with dying young, methinks. if that had said "the shocking life of brian wilson" on the front page back then instead of brian jones, he would probably be looked at way differently today. dying in your prime has a lot to do with image. it makes you more mythical, obviously. if brian jones (or jim morrison or gram parsons or whoever) had a chance to eventually burn out, he would be less glorified today. think about if jerry garcia died in '72. he'd be a fucking god. he's still a deserved legend now, but he went through all of those bad phases as he got older, burned out, got really fat, heroin, etc. many rock stars were living a crazy lifestyle in the 60's, not just brian jones. it very well might have been keith richards who died in '69. however, what i'm saying is, i don't know. haha, but fuck this is sort of ridiculous...lifestyle can't matter much if you're comparing brian jones and brian wilson. it's too subjective, and i'm sure if it was the other way around and brian wilson was known for his cavorting, fathering illegitimate children, taking many drugs, getting chased by girls (i just realized brian jones is a lot like paul mccartney), there would be a lot of "oh lifestyle doesn't matter, that's a cheap shot!" etc. thrown around. i mean, imagine if wilson died when he had his breakdown in '67 or whatever. he was just finished throwing the musical pop world overboard with pet sounds, and was working on another secret "masterpiece", and then boom! dies in his prime from an acid freak-out/breakdown. it would be a *huge* rock legend, no doubt. same thing with jones - he went the "rock star" way, mysteriously in his pool after he was just fired from the 2nd most popular band in the world. had he stayed alive, it's not certain he would have done that much, and it's interesting because he couldn't really write complete songs, so would all of his solo albums have been "brian jones presents moroccan music" or whatever? surely he would have tried to start a band, i would think, with people who could write. he was best when throwing ideas into other compositions. oh well, one thing's for sure: that is an *awesome* picture up there. john looks so cool in it. where the fuck's the guy who started this poll? haha. give me some parameters! |

Actually, it's pretty much common knowledge now that he was in the process of forming a supergroup (kinda like the Travelling Wilburys years later), which was gonna include, among others, John Lennon. |

very cool, that's what i figured. a new band was the best thing for brian jones. that's not really common knowledge, i think, since i've never really heard that anywhere else, and i'm like one of the biggest lennon fans in the world. john lennon was all over the place in 1969 and in the 70's altogether - he wouldn't have committed himself too long to this new band, i'm pretty sure. but it would have been awesome to have seen what would have come out of it all. |

i meant it was common knowledge for big Jones fans, not Lennon fans. And not only Jones fans, but fans that know about his last days. Bill Wyman mentions it on the 25 X 5 documentary. |

Yeah, actually, that is pretty common knowledge. They even talk about it on the commentary of The Rolling Stones Rock 'n' Roll Circus. I mean, don't most of us have that DVD? |

That sucks. My woodwork teacher is a big fan of classic rock so I burnt him a copy, along with a copy of Jean-Luc Godard's Sympathy For The Devil, rather than risking damage to my own. Do you have Sympathy? It's pretty good. |

What about the performance by the Rolling Stones, idiot? Besides, throughout the rest of the film, clips of Lennon and The Who are shown. You should see The Who go crazy during the performance of "Salt Of The Earth" - it's hilarious. Buy the DVD. Not to mention the great performances by Taj Mahal and Jethro Tull. Did you know that there's bonus footage of Lennon on the DVD? |

Yeah the Stones put on a hell of a performance. Only live performance of No Expectations with Brian playing the part that HE created. Keith was on fire that night too. Taj Mahal was great, but not essential, and I'm not a big fan of Jethro Tull so I usually skip that. |

Keith Richards, die young? Are you crazy? Nobody can kill him, just kidding. I know what you mean. But man I would love to know how many more songs Brian Jones could have been in. But no one will know. You rule Brian Jones.

Maybe it was because you called him an idiot in your "intelligent" response. |

My Beatles Trading Post (Updated Regularly) "George had just come off tour, I'd flown in specially from England, Ringo had flown in specially, too, I think, and John wouldn't show up! He wouldn't come from across the park! George got on the phone, yelled, 'Take those fucking shades off and come over here, you!' John still wouldn't come over. He had a balloon delivered with a sign saying, LISTEN TO THIS BALLOON. It was all quite far out." -Paul McCartney | |
