Yeah man, California Girls sure kicks the crap out of The Last Time!

Haha. That made me laugh so hard. Nice discussion you guys have going now. Though you gotta admit it was more fun before with all the stupidness about doing lots of women, at least you're getting somewhere now. Carpenter had made some excellent points. I think he's almost proved that Jones is better. But seriously, this whole thing has been very entertaining.

I will admit this to all the Jones supporters.....The Rolling Stones are easier to get a grasp of. Because of the aforementioned talk of California Girls, I just had a listen to it. Three years ago, I think I was in the same boat as the majority here, but now I've realized to fall in love with the song, as I have, you really have to pay attention. Or else all you'll hear is a cheesey song about a guy who thinks women are hot.

"George had just come off tour, I'd flown in specially from England, Ringo had flown in specially, too, I think, and John wouldn't show up! He wouldn't come from across the park! George got on the phone, yelled, 'Take those fucking shades off and come over here, you!' John still wouldn't come over. He had a balloon delivered with a sign saying, LISTEN TO THIS BALLOON. It was all quite far out." -Paul McCartney

no one can win this debate...

first of all, the poll says "better". that's subjective, so just vote for your favorite. it doesn't create parameters either. better songwriter? better musician? more influence. combine them all together and this is a tie. and seeing as how it's two completely different people with different images in the music scene, it gets controversial, too.

brian jones, musical extraordinaire, was a genius, plain and simple. a prodigy with musical instruments. he had many, many original and creative ideas. he lived a life of excess and died young which appeals more to certain people. he started the rolling stones, ultimately one of the most influential and greatest rock and roll bands ever. for that alone, he's a legend. in the beginning, he was the leader, and was slowly rooted out as mick jagger and keith richards became more prominent in songwriting. he helped create some of the greatest rock albums of the 1960's, including the rolling stones now!, out of our heads, aftermath, between the buttons, beggars banquet, and let it bleed. not to mention all of the singles. that right there makes him one of the most important figures. even though he didn't do much writing, his contributing ideas and presence on such music makes him totally necessary.

brian wilson, songwriter extraordinaire, was a genius, plain and simple. a prodigy with creating melodies and a brilliant bass player. he had many, many original and creative ideas, and continues to, what with the release of the acclaimed smile. he lived a troubled life filled with breakdowns and issues, but the fact that he's lived through it all and still continues to tour and stuff appeals more to certain people. he did most of the work for the beach boys in the 1960's, ultimately one of the most influential and greatest rock bands ever (no mike, not as good as the stones, but still high in basic rock hierarchy). for that reason alone, he's a legend. in the beginning, he was the leader until about 1967 when he suffered breakdowns and stepped down from it. he helped create (wrote and played on almost all of the songs) a few of the greatest rock albums of the 1960's, including the beach boys today and pet sounds. not to mention all of the singles, which were pretty innovative back in the early 60's. it seems less than all of the stones albums i mentioned, but brian was composing these albums mostly by himself, remember. and pet sounds, like it or not, is still in the top 5 on a lot of music lists (since those were brought up earlier), including rolling stone magazine, which has it at #2. and not only mccartney has hailed it. eric clapton, elton john, andrew loog oldham (stones' manager), bob dylan, etc. say it's one of the greatest and massively influenced them. it's too hard to believe that's just hype. but i'm getting off-topic here. that right there makes him one of the most important figures. his contributing ideas and presence make him totally necessary.

we're not comparing two bands here - that's asinine. even comparing two albums like pet sounds and between the buttons is. but everyone should at least be open-minded, you know?

i declare this a tie...?

how about next week: ray davies vs. keith moon!
