lol. Yeah, that was a stupid statement, but shouldn't we be discussing the greatest musical genius of all time (Brian Jones)?

do you really think he's the greatest musical genius of all time?

Musical genius? Yes.

Of all time? No. Im sure there's another person who's a greater musical genius. Beethoven, for one.

Why is it that all of a sudden nobody's posting in this thread?

Because there's nothing left to say.

"George had just come off tour, I'd flown in specially from England, Ringo had flown in specially, too, I think, and John wouldn't show up! He wouldn't come from across the park! George got on the phone, yelled, 'Take those fucking shades off and come over here, you!' John still wouldn't come over. He had a balloon delivered with a sign saying, LISTEN TO THIS BALLOON. It was all quite far out." -Paul McCartney

I was writing this whole long response, and then I lost it all in a technological clusterfuck I rather not recount, so I'll just say what i think he played on the tracks that some credible sources have said he plays on.

You Can't Always Get What You Want: acoustic guitar

You Got The Silver: Autoharp

Let It Bleed: Autoharp, possibly acoustic

Monkey Man: Possibly vibes or slide guitar

Midnight Rambler: Tribal Drums

Honky Tonk Women (single): Electric guitar

He could've played on all the tracks or on none of them, I just put what I think he played based on the information I've gathered from credible sources.

All in all, I think Let It Bleed could be considered as the last album that Brian contributed to, while Beggars Banquet was the last album in which he contributed to in a HUGE way (unless any of those slide guitars on Bleed where his, in that case then that was another huge contribution).

I really think Some Girls might be their best album.

No way, IMO.

Beast Of Burden is excellent, but nothing else on that album stands out as really great to me. It's impressive at first, but it doesn't age well. At least not for me. Shattered is terribly overrated.

But after all, it is the Stones. This means it's a good album, but it pales in comparison to their 60s and very early 70s work. To say Some Girls is their best album when they did stuff like Aftermath, Beggars Banquet, and Let It Bleed is like saying that the Beatles Decca Auditions bootleg is better than Sgt. Pepper (in my opinion, I'm not knocking yours).

i played some girls yesterday and it kicks ass. i'd put it up there alongside their 60's material. it's a classic. probably not better though.

I'm not trying to stir up any Anti-Jones sentiment, as that didn't factor into this at all, but from what I've listened to carefully of the Stones (which is all of their '60s albums, US and UK, their '70s albums, except for Black & Blue, Goats Head Soup, It's Only Rock and Roll and anything else between Exile On Main Street and Some Girls, Emotional Rescue, and anything after Tattoo You), I'd rank these as my personal favorites:

1. Some Girls
2. Between The Buttons
3. Sticky Fingers
4. Exile On Main Street
5. Aftermath
6. 12 X 5
7. Let It Bleed
8. Beggar's Banquet
9. The Rolling Stones, Now!
10. Tattoo You

That being said, The Beach Boys released some damn fine music while Brian Wilson was off snorting cocaine in bed.

I guess my primary issue with Jones is that he was never singularly responsible for a great single ("Good Vibrations") or great album ("Pet Sounds").

I'm planning on review their most of their sixties and seventies albums soon (from England's Newest to Some Girls, probably excluding Black and Blue) in the Rank Any Album section (I've already done Aftermath), and then I'll give you my list of their best (because I've got nothing better to do this sunday night).

The albums I'll review:

England's Newest Hitmakers
12 X 5
The Rolling Stones, Now!
Out Of Our Heads + some December's Children
Aftermath
Between The Buttons
Their Satanic Majesties Request
Beggars Banquet
Let It Bleed
Sticky Fingers
Exile On Main Street
Goats Head Soup
It's Only Rock n Roll (maybe)
Some Girls
