i don't think Wilson is BETTER, i just like him more

it's easy to say Jones was more talented, but i personally enjoy listening to the beach boys over the rolling stones (actually Pet Sounds only)

so i'm not basing my opinion on talent, only my personal musical taste
dirt, sweet, and filthy....

and for pet sounds to still be highly touted and heavily weighted even today, it's still an astonishing feat, i think, a masterpiece of modern times. i mean the fact that it is still really controversial today as being so "overrated" to some, and "beautiful gorgeous art" to others puts it in a higher context in my eyes than something like aftermath, which is considered by just about everyone to be another great stones album in their series of them. obviously it is great, their first with all originals, new instruments, etc. but the one controversial piece appeals to me more, because you can always find more beauty or imagination in those things. it's hard to explain, but it's true in all facets of art for me, at least.

That's a good, well thought out point.

For every Pet Sounds lover I've encountered, I've found two who think it's overrated and/or "don't get it."

"George had just come off tour, I'd flown in specially from England, Ringo had flown in specially, too, I think, and John wouldn't show up! He wouldn't come from across the park! George got on the phone, yelled, 'Take those fucking shades off and come over here, you!' John still wouldn't come over. He had a balloon delivered with a sign saying, LISTEN TO THIS BALLOON. It was all quite far out." -Paul McCartney

Then you mustn't purchase that great of stuff. Try buying some Stones albums from 1964 - 1968. That'll teach you the genius of Brian Jones.
Genius at work.

Pet Sounds has never hit me as what people say it is. With all the great praise and such, I had high expectations for the album. It was just another pop album to me. But maybe it's because I've never taken The Beach Boys seriously...

I think most people don't (take The Beach Boys seriously), and that's why they get so much gruff.

However, I think the reason people think Pet Sounds is overrated is because they haven't made the emotional connection with the album that I think is necessary to really appreciate it. There's nothing wrong with that....it's a matter of personal taste and individuality. It's just that it's such an emotional, heartfelt album, as Brian pours out his soul, and if you don't identify with it (and it doesn't even have to be a connection with the lyrics....just some sort of spiritual connection with the music, the sounds, the melancholy, the nostalgia) you're not going to come away as attatched to and appreciative of the music as some people are.

it's like that with anything innit? there's music out there that means the world to me but that other people don't care for and sometimes even dislike, because for whatever reason it doesn't have as strong an emotional connection. i don't have that connection that you do with pet sounds and never will, but i see where you're coming from that.

definitely an album that grows on you. the hype kind of ruins it, because people expect the Second Coming. and it's not, but it is just beautiful music. and i guarantee you'll start to get that if you forget all the hype and give it a few good listens in headphones. especially if you try picking out the various instruments and melodies. the little details come soaring out at you. for example, when the strings float in after "listen...listen...listen..." on "don't talk", it's magical. also the heartbeat that brian plays with his bass when he's talking about the girl's heartbeat. the a capella section of "sloop john b". and on and on.

if you just listen to it like a normal album, forgetting the accolades and the fact that it's the beach boys, it's just a great album that's amazing to listen to. it's well-known that it takes easily five or six good listens to really get into it, but once you do, you can't truly be disappointed because there's always more to discover.

fuck the image it's gotten and fuck comparing it to other shit, just listen to the music.

As a side note, Brian Wilson's iTunes celebrity playlist includes "Honky Tonk Woman" and "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction."
