Well, let's get it started then... On the blue corner, from Talentless land, weighing in with barely enough musical talent to be considered a musician... Brian [Penis] Wilson. And in the red corner, from Cheltenham, England, quite possibly the greatest instrumentalist of rock and the most influential member of the Rolling Stones, the one who completely beats the crap out of Brian Douglas [Dick-head] Wilson... Brian Jones! Any hate mail? Please PM me or send a stamped envolope to... The Echoes Drummer Makes Bad Ring Announcer 5757 E. Weed Rd. Alotta Fagina, NY 12345 |

after weeks of deliberation thinking about this interesting debate, i believe i have to go with brian wilson. looking at both sides completely open-mindedly (meaning i recognize the true importance of pet sounds and the true importance of everything jones did - and not dismissing either's accomplishments), i think wilson probably because of his composing skills. i mean i love brian jones - his whole image, his creativity and everything about him, and i appreciate all he did. it's not like i'm biased against him, saying some of his innovations were rubbish and way overrated. if someone says he did something, i'll believe it. but on the flip side, i won't dismiss any praise for wilson. the early singles from him were highly influential, sold a lot, and he was a brilliant pop songwriter. and i think when he reached his "mature" period in 1966, he had fully blossomed as a writer and reached that apex of musical innovation and creativity at a time when revolver, blonde on blonde, and aftermath were hitting the scene. and for pet sounds to still be highly touted and heavily weighted even today, it's still an astonishing feat, i think, a masterpiece of modern times. i mean the fact that it is still really controversial today as being so "overrated" to some, and "beautiful gorgeous art" to others puts it in a higher context in my eyes than something like aftermath, which is considered by just about everyone to be another great stones album in their series of them. obviously it is great, their first with all originals, new instruments, etc. but the one controversial piece appeals to me more, because you can always find more beauty or imagination in those things. it's hard to explain, but it's true in all facets of art for me, at least. i think brian jones is an utter genius, as well, obviously in a different vein than songwriting, but surely still a musical prodigy with an amazing personality and lifestyle, and that's why i idolize him more than i do wilson. but i also admire wilson that little bit more for what he accomplished (and in a place where he was mostly prejudiced against for his innovative ideas), if that makes sense. so i think in the grand scheme of everything, it's probably brian wilson for me. but i still think this is basically a tie ball-game and also a ridiculous poll, because it's so hard to compare two completely different legends. so save your bullshit, smokeybandit, i'm not up for it. i've thought this through a lot, and everyone who knows me knows i keep it fair. i'm not a wilson fan-boy who'll vote for him over anyone who steps up. i'm actually more of a brian jones fan-boy myself, i like him more personally, because i think he was different (and more creative) from the rest of the stones, which intrigues me. but i vote for brian wilson. so yeah. |
