Maybe it was because you called him an idiot in your "intelligent" response.

True, but I was frustrated.

True, but I was frustrated.

the *idiot* is the one who can't control his frustration in matters like these. it shouldn't matter to you at all what i do or don't like. if you want to persuade me to get something, don't call me an idiot. i'm telling you this to help you later on 'cause you're looking at a punch in the face in a real argument with your name-calling and acting like a prick just because someone disagrees with you. if you master that, then you're mature.

asshole. :tongueaction:

Yeah, you're right. I was the one being immature. Sorry. But still man, you should check out the full thing.

I was just listening to this amazing song called In India You (featuring sitars, tablas, tampura, sarod, some strange flute, etc.) by The Brian Jonestown Massacre from the album Their Satanic Majesties Second Request and really digging it, and then I realized that the song would probably not exist without Brian Jones. Just a thought.

If your still not free
Look inside you'll see
If you lie to me
You will never be

Don't you know?

If it's time to grow
Then the seed you'll sow
If you love yourself
So will everyone else

Don't you know?

If you try to be
You will never see
Look into free
And you soon will be

Don't you know?

Of course it wouldn't, because Brian Jones owns all. I should check out some of the BJM stuff. It's probably pretty good.

Actually I'd call it life-changing.

Funny thing, your avatar is a photoshop of the BJM's symbol, with the TOWN MASSACRE bit taken out.

Those lyrics almost make no sense.

The first two verses are typical philosophic teachings (mostly Buddhist), while the third is like cutting and pasting some words from the 1st and 2nd verses.

1st verse: you cannot be free if you live a life of sin.

2nd verse: you can't change if you don't try to change, and if you have self-respect, respect from others will follow.

3rd verse: but if you try too hard, you will never see the truth. If you look into freedom, you soon will have it.

That's how I interpret it.

the album (taken from a brian jones-era stones record) and the band (taken from a guy named brian jones) wouldn't exist without brian jones. and since the song is so eastern-inspired as you say, he had a big hand in that part, as well. :peace:

yeah pretty much. i'm pretty sure anton newcomb would've made music without brian jones, but his band wouldn't be called the same and the songs wouldn't be the same, so i totally agree.

Yup, that's how I got my avatar. I liked the look of their logo so much that I thought I should use it. As for the Massacre, I'll have to download some of their stuff.

As for all that Buddhist stuff, I'm not a follower of Buddha, but, it's all part of the appreciation, man.

Yeah exactly. You don't have to be Christian to appreciate the wisdom of Jesus, and same with Buddha.

Last time I checked, there's a torrent in good health that has almost their entire discography, or you could download their albums for free (legally) at brianjonestownmassacre.com (though it's gonna be in .ogg format, which is pretty rare, so you'll need WinAmp or a converter to play them).

I agree. I'm Christian but I still believe Buddha was a wise man who had good ideas, just was a little misguided. The teachings of Jesus and Buddha are both good messages that can improve our lives, except Buddha was mistaken in some aspects.

But, what's funny is, I heard that Buddhists once believed that Buddha was re-incarnated as a pig because, after Buddha died, this pig in the village walked towards the statue of Buddha. Man, that's pretty messed that they'd believe that.

Thanks, but I don't get the whole torrent thing (too confusing for me) and I don't have any player that will support .ogg.

There's a bunch of free converters on download.com. Most of them have a trial period: I got one that had a two week trial period, which is plenty of time to download and convert their whole discography.

Anyway, back to the Brian Jones thing. Just in case anyone still wants to play the card about Brian Jones having limited effect on The Stones and not being that big a deal, or just 'another guy in the band', check out their list of number ones (only in the UK and US, this list doesn't count South America, other European countries, Asia, Canada, etc), and what he contributed to each. [Sources include Wikipedia.org, Keno.org (fan site), and Old Gods Almost Dead by Stephen Davies]

Brian Jones Era:

It's All Over Now (1964): Cover of a song written by Bobby and Shirley Womack. Brian guitar weaves with Keef on the right channel and sings backing vocals.
Little Red Rooster (1964): This cover was chosen by Brian and features his excellent slide guitar work (center), which really differentiated it from the original song. It wouldn't have gone to number one without Brian's slide and harmonica work.
The Last Time (1965): Brian contributed the famous lead guitar riff. Most Stones fans think Brian should've received writing credit.
Satisfaction (1965): Some sources say he played rhythm guitar, others say Keith overdubbed it. He didn't have anything to do with the songwriting, that's for sure. Lead guitar riff and hook written by Keef, verse by Mick.
Get Off Of My Cloud (1965): Both Stephen Davis and Keno.org assert that Brian wrote the main guitar riff in this song.
19th Nervous Breakdown (1966): Keef had the higher sounding riff (E and E suspended back and fourth), while Brian came up with the lower sounding riffs which you can hear throughout, but is singled out a couple of times.
Paint It Black (1967): This is one of the songs that most people think Brian deserves credit for. He came up for the melody of the song on the sitar (Keef had chords, Bill Wyman had the beat, and Mick wrote lyrics later).
Ruby Tuesday (1967): This song has been acknowledge by pretty much everyone from the Stones camp as being written by Brian with a little help from Keith. He contributed most of the songwriting, recorder, and piano to the song. The credit was changed from Jones/Richards to Jagger/Richards shortly before its release by Andrew Oldham.
Let's Spend The Night Together (1967): Brian plays organ on this, but I've never heard anyone alledge that he should've gotten writing credit for it. Keith came up with the piano riff/melody. (double a-side with Ruby Tuesday).
Jumping Jack Flash (1968): Brian is credited with electric guitar and percussion in this song, but Keno makes a good point in his website about the intro to the song. He points out the fact that the intro the song is never played live after Jones' departure from the band, and this is probably because he came up with it himself (and the parts in which the pattern repeats again in the song). That's certainly consistent with the Glimmer Twins' treatment of Jones' memory and legacy. Wyman came up with the verse riff on the piano, Keith and Mick wrote the lyrics and melody together.
Honky Tonk Women (1969): Wikipedia states that rumors persist that Jones himself authored the riff to "Honky Tonk Women". While Jones did play the riff on the original recording, Keith Richards claims that they took the riff from Ry Cooder, and to date Cooder accuses them of "ripping him off". After Jones left the band, Mick Taylor was asked to record his own guitar for the song. They tried to edit out his guitar and were successful in some parts, but not in others.

Post-Brian Jones:
Brown Sugar (1971)
Angie (1973)
Miss You (1978)

With this you see,
remember me,
and bear me in your mind.
Let all the world say
what they may,
speak of me as you may find...
