I'm just saying I don't get why they get so much attention when they sound like standard rock fare from that period. You misread. |

I guess that a good point. Do you like or do you just think they're talked about too much? |

I think they're alright, I have Village Green Preservation Society on vinyl, which I put on occasionally. |

There weren't too many other "average rock bands" of that era that had a Ray Davies or nearly as many memorable melodies as The Kinks. |

I actually don't think they sound at all like an average rock band of the time. Mainly because they did tings that few (perhaps none) other bands were doing at that time. Actually as Aaron put it so nicely, nobody can write like Ray Davies can.
Don't get me wrong I love Arthur nearly as muich as Village Green (nearly) but the A Side of Village Green is the greatest thing to ever be put on a record. Not trying to change your mind here, but just as a recomendation try and get the 3 disc set of the album it has a full disc of unreleased songs (althiough some appeared on the Great Lost Kinks Album) of around that time that are just absolutely charming (Did You See His Name?, Misty Water, Groovy Movies, Lavender Hill among others) it made me appreciate a lot more that particular time in the Kinks career. |

I love Village Green, I just think that it's a bit samey and goes downhill after fantastic first four songs. Anyway, thx for the rec, I'll try to get it. |

Love Will Tear Us Apart, Again

Ray Davies has the best "story" songs ever. Plus his humour and his clever mocking of British society is great. |

Indeed: Did you see his name in the local paper, Stole a tin of beans, From a cut-priced grocery store. The judge said he must pay, So he put him on probation, And the paper gave his name. Did you see his name in the criminal section, And the center page. Gave his name and his address, They stopped him doing it again, So they put him to dishonour, And put the man to shame. He lost his little job, His employer was absolved of blame. His world just crumbled down, Incidently, did you see his name, In the obiturary column, Letters edged in black. Life was much too hard to live, So he brought it to an end, In his gas-filled maisonette. Because he couldn't stand the strain. La-la-la-la-la Life was much too hard to live, So he brought it to an end, In his gas-filled maisonette. Because he couldn't stand the strain. Did you see his name? Did you see his name? Did you see his name? |

THE JANITOR
|
Well up until the release of The Kinks singles "You Really Got Me" and "All Day And All Of The Night", the music of 1964 did have a few common elements. The Beatles and The Rolling Stones, for example had plenty of songs with rhythm and blues based rock and roll and love songs. Those two Kinks' singles, "You Really Got Me" and "All Day And All Of The Night" both start with a rauchous guitar intro; somewhat louder, bolder than much of the music culture was use to and even taking many by surprise. I know that today, it is difficult for us to relate, but in 1964, the opening guitar of "You Really Got Me" was straight bad ass to many. Nothing else like it. Were The Kinks the first "garage band"? They obviously demonstrate the ability to have songs that were raw and driven by guitar in a way the public had not heard before. Then turn and have some very poignant and thoughful lyrics with sweet melodies. Were they just another popular music band? The snarl and smart ass vocals delivered many times by Ray or Dave, Indian influences, satire, perceptive compositions and yes even a very few times, "like standard rock fare from that period". But far from average, mister. |

Well at least I didn't get outright flamed, I can appreciate why you guys like them, but they do seem kinda average to me, Ray Davies doesn't impress me all that much, I'll take Captain Beefheart anyday. |

So you prefer avantgardness over good songwriting. |

This has been established since Peter first joined here. I don't know why everyone is getting in a tizzy over it. |

Thinkin' one thing and doin' another
|
Agreed. And I think beatlematt's post is spot on; they were real pioneers back in the day with their earliest singles and Ray's social commentary was pretty much the only one worth a damn at the time. Most of the others were just part of shitey hippie ideals which were so generic and useless they may as well have not been there. |
