The lyrics are pretty clear:
"And I'm glad I'm a man and so is Lola"

Wasn't the song's strength the fact that these lines are ambiguous?

I'm glad [I'm a man and so is Lola]
[I'm glad I'm a man] and so is Lola.

Overall, I like the Kinks. I've heard some early songs, a Best Of from the mid-sixties and The Village Green Preservation Society. I like them, no more no less.

I'v eheard that and I don't know where the ambigous part is, english is not my first language so I'm probably missing something there I don't know.
Either way I read it I see that both are men.

[I'm a man and so is Lola] is variable #1.

or

[I'm glad I'm a man] and so is Lola, in the sense that she's glad that *he* (Ray Davies) is a man.

Very brilliant.

I posted some interesting stories about their songs and albums in the Pink Floyd forum but I'm gonna re -post them here since I find them quite interesting.

In the album by the Kinks "Face to Face", which is essential in any album collection, the song "Rosie Won't You Please Come home" is a sad story of a mother that wishes her daughter would come back, because she apparently has forgotten about her family. In reality, Ray Davies had a sister, named Rosie she lived in Australia and her husband beat her up a lot, and she wrote heartbreaking letters to her family about this. Everyone wanted her to come back.

In the song Muswell Hillbilly, you know it starts by the words "Well I said goodbye to Rosie Rooke this morning", she actually existed and was a very good friend of Ray's mother when they were about 16. Apparently she was a real looker because the guys whistle at her a lot.
The previous song in the album, Uncle Son is also about a real person, he was, like the song, his uncle a simple man, simple rules and simple plans, he worked in the railways station and wasn't very smart. He once drew Ray a train, he wasn't talented but Ray loved the drawing.
I'm pretty sure everyone has seen the video for Come Dancing, well Ray is dressed in fact like a bus driver he knew when he was a kid. He had that funny moustache and all, he remembers beign always very kind and helping old ladys get on and off the bus.

This is more interesting:
The album Schooboys In Disgrace is a rock opera about a boy that has sex with a girl, gets caught by the principal, who beats up the boy for doing that and finally expelles him from school.
That in fact happened to Dave Davies, he was shagging a girl in the school and someone (not sure if it was the principal) caught them in the act. He then beat up Dave in front of his family and then kicked him off school.
Years later, after the Kinks were famous, Dave met the principal in a music store, I think, and the guy came up to him and said: " Oh David! how lovely to see you!" Dave wanted to punch him in the face.

This is what I consider The Kinks' swan song. Their last great song and of the greatest in their catalogue, fantastic lyrics.

I thin kI already gave him Muswell Hillbillies... I'm not sure. The other ones, yeah you should get them they're absolutely essential.
If you still like them after that:

The Kink Kontroversy
Misfits
Word Of Mouth

man these guys are just fucking fantastic. I just wish there was someone on this board that loves them as much as I do.

I never liked Something Else By The Kinks. It just put me off. I think I only enjoyed two tracks.

Village Green is a good album, though.

Village Green is a good album, though.

Which ones? Waterloo Sunset and David Watts? I could understand that because they're more "accesible" to everyone from the album.
Well it's your taste in the end, but I'm gonna say that most of Kinks' albums have to grow on you. After some time you might discover how great songs like Two Sisters, No Return, Afternoon Tea, Harry Rag and Situation Vacant really are.

Funny I think only two songs on the album are so-so, End Of The Season and Lazy Old Sun

I have everything from Face to Face to Muswell Hillbillies. I've probably given each maybe about two or three listens. It's really a shame I don't play them more often. So far, I think Muswell is my favorite.
