'Wish You Were Here'...the album and the song are both great to start off your collection with. It's one of the more humble albums they have in my opinion, and the intro track 'Shine On You Crazy Diamond' haha is a mind blowing intro track, and I'm sure you'd really dig it Sofi. Another album you should try and get into of theirs is 'Piper At The Gates of Dawn'...seeing as how it was their first album, it'll kinda be appropriate to go back to their roots of music and see how the grew as a band and formed major albums like 'The Wall' and 'Dark Side' which you've heard. Soooo..I recommend:

Album: Wish You Were Here
Track: Wish You Were Here, Shine On You Crazy Diamond (Part I-V)

Album: Piper At The Gates of Dawn
Track: Astronamy Domine, Lucifer Sam...and THE GNOME <333 :3

*and if you dig intrumentals....then Intersteller Overdrive on Piper is a MUST listen to.*

A good one to start with is their mega-hit "The Darkside Of The Moon". Ew, many Floyd fans love it, but a few dislike it (mainly because many Floyd fans love it). But the music inside the album is excellent. It's not their best (save that for "Wish You Were Here"), but it's a great starter. 5 - 7 minutes regular radio friendly tracks are how to roll, and this has some of their best - "Money", "Time", "Us and Them" and "Brain Damage/Eclipse". In fact, besides the title track on "Wish You Were Here", those are more-or-less their most loved tracks.

And even the techo insturmentals are alright. "Any Colour You Like" has grown on me, "Speak to Me/Breath" is a nice, calm opener, "On The Run" is catchy and quick, and "The Great Gig In The Sky" has brilliant female vocals.

I know it's "lol manistream ew!", but it's a wonderful album to start. Then get "Wish You Were Here", "Animals" and "The Wall".

I'd say Darkside. I'ts not their best, but it's their most fan friendly.

Whatever you do, don't get More! That'll kill you!

Yeah, Dark side of the moon isn't one of the most famous albums without reason! Although it's psychiatric as well! It's about a man's decline into paranoia! It stayed on the charts for years! Record time!

Get Meddle!

Wish you were here is unique, and the most authentic, the most typical Floyd.

Although, I must enforce once again, they're a health hazard!

well, i got my name (scarecrow) from a pink floyd song which is from 'piper at the gates of dawn' so i quess you should go for that! people call 'sgt pepper's lonely hearts club band' physchedlic, but that album is nothing compared to 'piper at the gates of dawn' which is REAL physchedlic music. It's very differnt to any other pink floyd album, because it has syd barrett at their leader. He writes and sings every song on the album bar one, which was written by roger walters in the style of syd anyway. Syd's only other contribution to a pink floyd album (besides the obvious influence of madness) is a song he has at the end of their second album. It's worth reading into the history of the album and band before you get their music... it just makes it more enjoyable to listen to, if that makes sense.

Didn't Syd contribute to Ummagumma? Or is it the live part, so it doesn't count?

Division Bell is the best to start with and then Momentary Lapse of Reason, Final Cut and Animals.

No, he didn't. They played Syd songs after he departed, and "Astronomy Domine" was a popular one. But no, he was gone after Piper, although he did have one (great) song, "Jugband Blues", on A Saucerful of Secrets.

There are some good songs of More like Nile Song and Cymbeline. The Divsion Bell is alright, AMLOR has like 3 good songs...THE FINAL CUT SHOULD BE AVOIDED AT ALL COSTS.

Even though WYWH, ANIMALS and THE WALL kick its ass , DARKSIDE should be the first one I reckon it will get you more accoustomed before you go into the 23 minute epics and the stuff of atom heart which is awesome but could be odd the first time lsitener.

You should also join Team Gilmour, the winning team.

i think i'll pick darkside, as it's the most recommended one so far, and i wouldn't like to 'start with', i want their best work and if i LOVE it then get (part of) the rest. which songs do you think i should download to get the --mmhhh--- orientation of the album?
