I get it, I've heard it, I just don't like it.

there's a difference between not liking something and stating your opinion like that or saying it flat-out sucks.

and i truly believe most great art has to be "gotten" to its full potential to be really appreciated. all art begins with a person or a group who had a singular vision for it. i'm sure you've heard all things must pass, but you're not hearing the thing that makes other people like it. they "get" that thing.

by the way, i'm just curious. what don't you like about all things must pass? it's just a collection of well-written songs, there's no thematic unity thing or anything like that to really get into.

I listened to it a bunch. I tried the "headphones in the dark" bit, I listened to it. Really listened to it, and as music, it just doesn't click with me. I don't really like it. I can't explain what I don't like about it, other than I don't find any of the songs memorable or "great" or anything.

and that's perfectly fine. everyone has music like that. but would you go around saying the album "sucks"?

well, there's more than one way to "get" something. you might "get" it in one way that is unique to you, but you are not "getting" it in the way that everyone else does. if you did, you would love it. for example, i don't "get" something like david gilmour solo music. yeah, i get it in my way, but if that's the way it was supposed to be gotten, noone would like it. does that make any sense?

i meant "getting it" in the way that it really appeals to you and you can fully sense its place as true Art. like you did for the dark side of the moon. you obviously "get" the genius of it.

I don't "get" all this talk. Seriously. I don't want to have to ass around to listen to an album in the dark to know it's good. I want something accessible, listenable at any time. Music should set the mood, not you set the mood for music.

great music is accessible any time, anywhere, if you like it. if you have to set the mood to appreciate your music, it's not really working and you're just kidding yourself. setting the mood can enhance music listening, though. definitely. it can also help you focus more on the music. otherwise, it might pass you by.

accessible music isn't always great, though. there's always that option with truly great music to search deeper within it. you don't have to, but that's what some people do want, and that's what really makes the best music timeless.

I guess I don't understand the concept of making music into something greater than it is. I guess some people enjoy "enhancing" the music but if something is good to me, I don't want to hang myself on a ceiling upside down while eating Pop Rocks to make it better.

The Dark Side Of The Moon, to get back on topic, is an amazing record. It's a "grow as you go" album. Each listen you notice more interesting. I still enjoy The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn for various reasons, but as Tom said to me one day, and I agreed, after you've heard all their stuff, the only albums you can really stand anymore are Piper, Dark Side and Wish You Were Here. I'll add The Wall in that list as well. The rest are okay but they have flaws. Those four are rock gems and you can't deny it.

Plus the cover of Dark Side makes for good t-shirts, posters, ect. :cigar:

Yes, but I'm listening to it in broad daylight at 2 in the afternoon like I would any other album, not in my room with lights turned on and incense burning. It's just a very fine album, I didn't need to improve listening habits just for it.

right, but you're still discovering something deeper, which is the mark of great music and art, which is what i was saying. listening to it alone in a dark room is only something certain people have to do to focus on its genius and intricacies. if you can do that at 2 in the afternoon on a computer or wherever, more power to you. personally, i have to turn everything else off to really get into music (or other art), and it works for me.

Yeah that's not for me I guess. I just like music for being amazing to listen to and noticing everything these people did. I don't search for something deeper, I suppose.

My favourites are "The Wall" and "Final Cut" (and "Amused to Death"), followed by "Animals". As much as I like and have loved "Dark side of the moon", it doesn't mean as much to me as Roger's later more personal words, but that doesn't mean I don't appreciate how great it is.
So fuck off.
Just kidding. :)
