DANNY & THE CHAMPIONS OF THE WORLD - You Don't Know (My Heart Is In The Right Place)

Festival favourites Danny Wilson and his Champions Of The World (not to be confused with Danny Wilson, rubbish Scotch popsters), are working away in that rootsy Americana world, so beloved of Later and Mojo magazine. And it's alright.

It's a wee bit Brooce, it's a wee bit gospelly, it holds the attention for it's alloted span, but it doesn't really hold on to you for very long afterwards. It's still the same kind of thing he was doing al lthose years ago in Grand Drive, but it hasn't really moved very far along. Nice.

HYENAS - Filthy Electricity

Hyenas. Grubby, dirty, smelly animals. Which may be why the band have chosen that name. Because they're a wee bit grubby and smelly as well. Folk from Embra will remember a manky pub called La Sorbonne, where every band who'd ever been influenced by the Velvet Underground or The Stooges would come along in their skinny jeans and ripped leather jackets of a Saturday night. Gyneas would have fitted in nicely along beside Southern Death Cult, Nico (yes, really) and Theatre of Hate.

So, mainly because it reminds me of being young, I quite liked this. Singer Paul marks is channelling some Bowie, Zach Rembrandt (probably not his real name) can churn out a dirty riff, and drummer Jes can, well, drum. The A-side is quite addictive, and the B-side (ask yer Dad), 'You Should Not Operate Machinery' is equally enjoyable.

They'll never rise above the ranks of a club band, but if they've a few more up their sleeves like these two, then the cider n' black brigade will have a good night out.

TURBO BLANC - Sun Up

Didn't grunge die with a welcoming shotgun blast? Apparently not. I can't even pretend to like anything about this record. The main song is like a Nirvana out-take, the B-side is like something Kyuss ejaculated while asleep. No thanks.

HOLY COVES - The Droner EP

This is rather annoying. A four track EP (with a fifth, edited version of the title track), this veers between the really good and The Smashing Pumpkins. Which is close to being one of the worst things ever. Unfortunately for me, that shift often takes place in the same song.

The best number is 'What's Happened To You Has Happened To Me', which has the most life about it. Elsewhere, they seem a little bit unsure about where each song is going. However, it sounds like a big budget production, so hats off to co-producer David Wrench for a bang up job. I'd have dumped 'Come Alive', which is far too nineties in sound, but there's enough here for me to think that the Welsh boyos could be a name to watch out for.
