CHRIS DUARTE GROUP
Blues In The Afterburner

Blues Bureau 2011

I'm an admirer of Mr Duarte, no question about it. He's been a regular on my radio show, and I'm fair pleased to have a new record by him spinning away. But the clues are there, even before playing, that he's trying out something a wee bit different.

Yes. the sixties psychedelic stylings aren't just for show. For sure, there's always been psychedelic hints to his power trio blues rock, but they're more up front this time. As are the hints of roots rock and Americana. The man himself says "There are some tunes on there that I would classify as in the Americana genre. Plus I've put down some 'country-fied' stylings on one of my solos." But don't be feart. It's still a good album.

He's certainly singing better than ever, and his guitar work is always a treat, backed up with his solid power trio of Robert Watson on bass and Aaron Haggerty on drums. It's all self penned, bar one song written by members of Japanese bluesters Blustone Company, whom he's recorded and toured with on the past. And if you want to hear his Motley Crue inspired (!) co-write with Mike Varney - "Sweet Young Pussy Cat" - then you'll need to shell out for the Japanese version.

But the bones of the record are still as solid as a rock, and if you like your white boy blues in the mould of Stevie Ray Vaughan and Joe Bonamassa, then tunes as good as "Another Man", "Milwaukee Blues" and "Black Clouds Rolling", will keep you happy for a long time to come.
