Tales Of The Sands

Album number three from the Tunisian prog-metallers, and this could be the one to move them up a few places in the ever congested league table.

They're certainly ambitious, and to that end have pulled in producer Fredrik Nordstrom, who has worked with In Flames and Dimmu Borgir to mix it, and Jens Bogren (Opeth, The Devin Townsend Project) for mastering. and they've certainly earned their fee, if the fantastic sound is anything to go by.

That would be nothing if the music didn't match it, and to a large extent it does. This is no small measure due to the adventurous arrangements and instrumentation they've added to their basic prog-metal sound. I don't know exactly what the heck is going on, but there is some spendid and unusual percussion work going on, as well as some string instrumentation.

But they haven't forgotten the metal, with some great guitar parts and riffs from Malek ben Arbia, and solid vocals from Zaher Zarguatti. When they manage to combine all the above with a top notch tune as they do on the likes of "Wide Shut," "Requiem for a Goodbye," and "Braving The Seas", then there is no reason to think that they can't push on to become a big name in prog-metal circles.

There are a couple of tunes that are a bit by-numbers, but if you're looking for something to add to your Evergrey and Symphony X collection, then this could be for you.
